Torres turned down penalty.
According to Juan Mata, who took the penalty and missed, Torres turned down the opportunity to grab his first goal since October.
I asked Fernando if he wanted to take it because he had won the penalty,' said Mata.
'But he said "I'm not first on the list to shoot" and so he did not take it. 'Fernando is my friend and I try to help him.
'I don't know why he didn't take it.

Re: Torres turned down penalty.
With that kind of mentality he will never get any better.
He needs some confidence. Physically he still has a bit left in him.

Re: Torres turned down penalty.
his block is mental you can see him doing great with dribbles and runs until he reaches the box than he misses.
He might refused it because he wants to score from ingame and if thats the thing big respect

Re: Torres turned down penalty.
I agree it's definitely a mental block. Huge pressure on him from the start because of his reputation and transfer fee, and now it looks like the media and critics have got even Torres himself believing that he sucks. The sh1t that Chelsea is going through right now isn't helping, either.
He still makes good plays but you can see that when he has to finish, he just goes blank and makes the wrong choice or thinks too much and bottles it.

Hypnosis is the key, it seems that it was suggested by the club however turned down by Torres.

Re: Torres turned down penalty.
This is it. If Torres can't overcome this mental weakness and insecurity, he's finished as a striker. It really is that simple. Sure, he may blunder into the rare goal, but he will never be a true threat. The best strikers/athletes are those that have faith in themselves no matter how bad their recent performance. If he no longer has that, the game's over.

Pretty sad really. If only he was an arrogant, self loving player he would have no issue(serious, no sarcasm).

Re: Torres turned down penalty.
He's never been known as much as a penalty taker anyways, still though he shouldn't have bottled his chance.
Although maybe its like deviangel says, wants to get out of his draught the proper way and the hard way but I personally doubt thats the case.

Tim Howard- ...
He really should have taken it. One would question how much a penalty would have upped his confidence though. Probably more than not taking it- but if he misses...? Even worse.

If he had scored that pen though, everyone here would have been like "only way he can score goals these days"

Re: Torres turned down penalty.
I, for one, still have faith that he'll come good. I'm entirely content to wait for that.
Turning down that penalty speaks volumes about who he is as a player in many ways. I choose to interpret that he would rather score the way a striker of his calibre should score and that's from open play. As pointed out, he never really was a peno taker anyway though so the whole situation, while interesting, is decidedly academic.
