no gustavo would have come, we just didn't offer as high as bayern wanted, that is it. wenger backed off.The Franchise wrote:True. But Gustavo didnt want to go to Arsenal right? Rather than Arsenal not bidding.
And is Gomez that much different to Giroud? In Wenger's mind probably not.
When you sub one for the other, you have basically done nothing...except maybe Giroud is slightly better with the ball and Gomez is slighty more clinical.

As I said in one of the threads, they didn't really need to spend much either. If I was the Arsenal manager, I would've gone ahead and bought Luiz Gustavo, Gameiro and Caballero.. all in 30m.
There's no problem with having immense faith in your team, but when your rivals are massively strengthening their teams, you can't just let go.

Once you sign for a club, you obviously wouldn't say that you didn't want to come there. Don't buy into what players say on their interviews. Robbie Keane is supposedly a boyhood fan of every club he's every played for.The Franchise wrote:So why is Gustavo clearly saying he wants to stay in Germany in his quotes?REWB wrote:no gustavo would have come, we just didn't offer as high as bayern wanted, that is it. wenger backed off.The Franchise wrote:True. Re: Wenger is old
In the last 8 years the only thing keeping wenger in the job this long was two things:
-the amazing football
-the limited funds for the transfer market.
BOTH of those things are no more.
We play average football now but we also have the funds to fix it. There was no excuse this summer, NONE. This manager is old and out of date, the OP has it right, there are many managers out there better than him, he needs to be replaced, new younger blood needs to be brought in.
It’s such a shame because his stubborn nature has ruined his own reputation and legacy. Instead of being like sir alex and adapting to the times and being a progressive he decided to be conservative. Adapting to situations is how you WIN it’s how you survive, THAT'S EVOLUTION. Unfortunately wenger doesn't understand this, he thinks he is bigger than arsenal and the fans; when that happens the club has a problem.

there are also quotes of him being interested in a move to arsenal, i am telling you if we had bid more/show'd more intent than wolfsburg we would have got him, it's that simple. The Franchise wrote:

Re: Wenger is old
Well if Arsenal fans are to be believed it sounds like they really need a finisher, which was the reason he was interested in Higgy in the first place. I don't really watch Arsenal often enough to know if they really do, but that seemed to be the consensus. Gomez fits the bill. If they wanted a more Suarez type player who can both create and finish the chances he got City got a great scoop with Jovetic and I'm not sure what they were doing after Higgy. The Franchise wrote:True. Re: Wenger is old
Arsenal has let Wenger put the team in almost an impossible situation in the transfer market for a couple reasons.
1) They cannot compete for top class talent anymore. Players who play for small clubs and want to move to a large club don't consider Arsenal part of the top class of clubs. Also players who want to move from a top club see Arsenal as a step down.
2) Players know you don't go to Arsenal to get paid. Top players feel they deserve to get paid what other top players earn and Arsenal will just not match these wages.
3) They insist even though they are very financially stable to use there insane wage scale. Even if they break it for a player or two those players know there not going to bring in other world class players with the wage scale still active. IT almost puts too much pressure on the player to be the only one on huge wages.
4) Wenger WILL NOT pay over the odds for a player the team NEEDS. HE sets a value on a player and will not spend the extra 3-5 mill to make sure they get that player and get the deal done. Instead he holds out and risks losing that player to other teams.
5) Wenger would always rather get 2 good players then 1 great player. IMO this is the biggest thing holding Arsenal back in there no trophy years. They have good players all over the pitch but they just don't have those big game breaking players anymore. They basically replace there great players with multiple good players and it's a bad cycle.
6) Wenger refuses for what ever reason to buy a great to world class keeper. This is the one position where you don't have to be a great team to attract top talent. Teams like Newcastle, Everton, QPR etc should not have better keepers then Arsenal. There is just no reason for it.
BTW I don't think Arsenal should fire Wenger. They need to get a GM and give him the power to buy and sell players and not use a wage scale as they really don't need it anymore and have Wenger coach those players. IMO that would be the best course of action.

Re: Wenger is old
I've been advocating this, too. On the playing side of things, Wenger has his faults (tactics in the big games and poor squad rotation being two prominent ones) but he does tend to get the best out of the squad he has. Off the pitch, though, he's becoming increasingly ineffective and desperately needs the sort of help he used to get back before 2007 when David Dein was still at the club.BTW I don't think Arsenal should fire Wenger. We're trying to bring bigger and better players now but it's a part of the market we haven't operated in before and I don't think Wenger, perhaps even the whole club, fully understand what you have to do to get those sorts of players in.

While its hard for me to be positive all of the time as bleak as the current situation looks, I believe that Wengers last chapter with Arsenal will not end in a bleak demise. I believe he will ride out into the sunset on one last success, and have one last laugh before both the club and the man move on to the next phases of their lives. I really do

I've said once, and I'll say it again.
Wenger needs a DoF to help him with transfers. He is too old now to have mass control of the club.

Re: Wenger is old
If Wenger doesn't lead Arsenal to CL football this season then he should be fired.Honestly there is no excuse for announcing that you have loads of money to spend then spend none of it despite having a thin squad that could use re-enforcement in some positions which could take Arsenal to the top.
Arsenal can't even manage an FA cup run for some reason. Had they won it a few times maybe the atmosphere around the club would be a bit calmer but so long as the "X years without a trophy" comments continue to hang over Wenger's head he's going to be judged on a very superficial basis.
Even if Arsenal do indeed get 4th spot by May next year I personally don't think they'll ever get any higher than where they are now if they maintain their stance on player valuation and wage structure.

Clearly higgy's signing would not have been enough as a DM is still needed but for a club that has 70m + sales on the bank account ready for action Wenger is being way too frugal.
1. Higuain is worth that
2. They will miss out on 4th

Re: Wenger is old
Arsenal missing out on 4th is a very real possibility. I personally think they will make 4th but I'm not exactly rushing to make a bet.
Also I'm a Higuain fan and if Cavani and Suarez are worth 50+ million, Higuain for 30 million (the price Arsenal could have had him for had they sealed the deal early) would have been fair.
My gripe with point 1 is mostly bias to my favourite player however my gripe with point 2 is that it's a giant assumption on Dani's part.
Like I said I think Arsenal will make it but who knows, the law of averages is bound to catch up with them.
P.S. Don't face palm at any of my posts again Jibers (unless I give you permission )

Higuain is clearly around 35 million worth. He is young and scores at least 20 goals a season if he is a starter.

Maybe Arsenal require a finisher but I think some quitely hope Giroud will improve upon his first season and be that guy. If you have him and another type of player, thats good versatility. Giroud and a Gomez or a Higuain..meh..im not sure about.

Re: Wenger is old
Not buying Gustavo wanted to stay in Germany as the sole reason for this transfer. There are ways to tempt players and one of them is wage..
Last i heard Arsenal offered way less wages than Wolfburg offered..that obviously was the biggest reason to me.
Also Gustavo will get enough playing time with Arsenal. They play over 50 games a year unlike Wolfburg who plays in Mini league bundesliga and has no European competitions.
I think for wenger, spending few extra pounds for a player is a failure and signing players on a cheap is like a trophy.

Whether you want to buy it or not, it's a fact. Gustavo rejected Napoli, Atletico Madrid, Inter and Spartak Moskau to stay in Germany. It was a family decision.

Atletico Madrid has absolutely no money to spend let alone an amount like 10 mill+..Inter Milan spending 15 + will be a shock to me as well lol. That leaves Napoli and Arsenal..a shame both could not tempt him with anything though i have no doubt if it was a big club like Manu in for him he wouldnt think twice about it.
