Re: Wenger is old
After reading some of the comments on the arsenal board, felt like a good idea to revive this thread. I dont know if something good will happen to that team again with Wenger in charge. If anything, it looks to me like he has forgotten what it takes to win, as far as getting the right players to compete, and not running his own little experiment with his Ramsey-Arteta double pivot and that kind of things.
Say what you want but missing out on signing Higuain, to engage on a goose chase after Suarez, which ultimately failed, is the biggest transfer flop of the summer. Higuain was there for the taking, even if Madrid d*cked him around pricewise, he could have made that extra effort to get a a WC CF. Market is what it is now, Napoli paid 37 mil + 3 bonuses, which isnt outrageous to me. You easily could have afforded that.
Now they cant even convince the likes of Gustavo to sign for them. Wolfsburg over Arsenal? is this a joke? No CL, no ambition, nothing over a CL club? that's a slap in your face Wenger.
Not to mention is classic "i tried to sign players" move, and the "we beat City, we can challenge for the title" talk
feel sorry for Arsenal fans

Re: Wenger is old
Arsenal need elite players and they need to understand in order to sign them they'll need to pay a lot. The value of players is getting higher.
In terms of Wenger, I'm not sure why Arsenal don't sack him. One of the reasons why I think they find it hard to sack him is because it feels as if he's 'part of Arsenal'. When you think of Arsenal you think of Wenger.
However in order to succeed they need to take drastic actions and one of them could be to get rid of Arsenal. People might then say, 'well if Wenger can't succeed, then who can?' However that notion needs to go.

Re: Wenger is old
Im sure florentino would have considered a 30m bid for Higgy, he said so himself, and Higgy really wanted Arsenal and would have forced the move. But Arsene refused to spend those extra 5m and now stands to lose way more money by missing out on the CL and, more importantly, on the title as every other top team is in transition. Clearly higgy's signing would not have been enough as a DM is still needed but for a club that has 70m + sales on the bank account ready for action Wenger is being way too frugal.

I agree with not shelling out what Madrid were asking for Higuain and you could say we genuinely tried to break Suarez out of Anfieldtraz. But the Gustavo farce is embarrassing and hurts. Don't know how a club like freaking Wolfsburg have more sway than us nowadays

Mr Arse Wenger has made over 50million in wages alone since 2005.
and, to add insult to injury (no pun arsenal fans) lol, it was the last time they actually won a trophy

Absolutely, but Tottenham were only 1 point away from you last season and reinforced their team with quality, whereas you have only lost depth. This should have been the year you went for the title, instead you'll be fighting for the CL until the last match day yet again.Lex wrote: Calma, Barrilo, we're still favourites to qualify

Can't really defend him anymore, I mean in the last few years one could find a logical explanation for some of his decisions, but the whole Higuain thing is just madness.

1. Higuain is worth that
2. They will miss out on 4th
He isnt and they wont.

But will they win the title? Will they even compete for it? I'm not criticizing the not-signing of Higuain but the reluctance to participate in the market. It seems that Arsene has decided that the market is crazy so he will have no part in it. That would be defensible with great scouting, but they don't have that and paying an extra 5m over your valuation is clearly preferable to not signing anyone at all. It seems Wenger is perfectly content to fight for 4th.

Re: Wenger is old
I sorta want him gone, but it would be a shame if he had to be sacked. Don't think it'll happen though, because we've let him get bigger than the club. The enamoration with his 'philosophy' has come to be the characterization of the club and people are too afraid to move on from that.
Personally I could give two s**ts about the identity the club has under the late reign of Wenger. Those principles have yielded nothing but mediocrity for a top club. I'd be fine with life after Wenger. People always ask, "who can replace Wenger to win then?" I dont know, but change is imperative to move forward, and if he doesn't change his ways then he's the problem. I dont care about getting a manager to replace him who plays the same style etc. I'd prefer someone who will do everything it takes to becoming a championship team.
And as for the transfer efforts or lack thereof, the problem is we weren't involved early enough. Teams were securing targets before the season even ended last season. We were nowhere near being in the mix and thought we could wait until June to even consider doing business. When it happened I was saying it was a big mistake, but other supporters thought we'd be fine. "Oh, the window isn't even open yet," "We still have plenty of time," blah, blah, blah. Well now look at us...

Re: Wenger is old
The Market is the way it is, every selling club is out to make money. You either take part in the market, or you dont. There is no point trying to act noble because no one will care. Look at Perez, at first he says 30 millions, but as soon as the list of top CFs shrink on the market, he ups the price. In retrospective that was brilliant.
The whole Suarez debacle was laughable, not only did they lack respect to Liverpool but they went into it with the wrong information.

I am not one of those who think they would win it even with Suarez.
But I generally agree with you, but it shouldnt surprise anyone..this is Wenger, this is who he is.
He thinks his players are better than they are, he believes in them too much...and he thinks that its very hard to sign better ones...and when he does find them, he still isnt willing to pay more than what he thinks they are worth.
I understand him, even though it frustrates everyone, include me.
If im an Arsenal fan, im pissed of at not signing Gustavo..but is that Wengers fault? Doesnt seem like.
Also annoyed at not signing Suarez, but it seems like money isnt the only thing stopping that happening either.

I think Wenger needs to wake up and get off his high horse, most top players gonna cost a lot more simple, and its not like wenger is making klopp signings either

Suppose they signed Gomez + Gustavo (or say Paulinho) for a combined 40m which is about what Bayern sold them for and you suddenly have a team that is able to get a good amount of points while the new City, United and Chelsea figure out what works and what doesn't under the new coaches.BarrileteCosmico wrote:Clearly higgy's signing would not have been enough as a DM is still needed

True. But Gustavo didnt want to go to Arsenal right? Rather than Arsenal not bidding.
And is Gomez that much different to Giroud? In Wenger's mind probably not.
When you sub one for the other, you have basically done nothing...except maybe Giroud is slightly better with the ball and Gomez is slighty more clinical.

Re: Wenger is old
so arsenal have only signed sanogo, correct?
i mean i gotta feel for arsenal fans. its one thing when they dont expect to make signings because that was the precedent that was set before, but when all these promises are made this summer that they were going to compete with the big clubs for big signings and all they have to show for it is sanogo...
i would be very frustrated.

Re: Wenger is old
As to the disrespecting Liverpool bit, i'm not buying it.
Assuming that you're talking about the £40M + £1 bid
They thought that a bid of over £40M would legally activate some type of clause. Now that wasn't the case, but Arsenal thought it was at the time.
Now, what sort of good business would pay MORE than they have to to get the exact same service/product/whatever?
If the clause did dictate that is was activated for > £40M, and Arsenal payed £45M then they'd be laughed at for being 'robbed'
In the case of Gustavo, didn't he exclusively want to stay in Germany? From what I've read, that was the case. And Wenger is at fault for several things. Not being in Germany is not one of them.
