The Duel (part 2) Empty The Duel (part 2)

Post by The Franchise Thu Feb 02, 2012 4:13 pm

Despite the utter and abject failure of part 1 and the lack of intrest it got, at least 4 or 5 guys were involved.

Its not a big difficulty to post so here is part 2.

The world remembers them as team mates. As the iconic pillars of genius under Brazil’s majestic 1982 side.

But for the majority of their careers, Zico and Socrates were fierce rivals.

Zico, the great star of Flamengo. A playmaker and goalscorer united in one.

Socrates, the undisputed leader of Corinthians. Always calm, always in control.

In a direct confrontation between these legends, who would come out on top?

Watch and vote.

I have not seen the full match but based on the highlights definitely Zico.
Great video and great music.
On the players, both were fantastic.Socrates was a midfielder,Zico more of a playmaker/forward.Zico was clearly the better player though.
What a player Zico was.One of the top 5 best players I have seen.
He could do anything. Before 86 WC many regarded him as better than Maradona.

Zico for me aswell, just oozes class and for me was involved in more plays that decided the outcome than Socrates was......

On Zico as a player, its funny you mention that Alex because my dad always considered Zico the better player over Maradona and i always listened to him Laughing so despite not seeing him much iam inclined to agree with you lol.

He has gone a bit senile recently tho , so i tend to ignore him now. Having said that he did say Dzeko is overrated when he signed for City and predicted him to flop hmm

Anyway lol it's Zico for me.

Maradona is overrated, people felt in love with the persona more so than the player.

edit: you can be an elite player and still be rated above your value...just saying

Indeed, Zico was probably more intengral. More touches in important areas.

Socrates has a magic touch though and his size was really the first thing that struck me. Physically he seemed a beast with great technical skills too.

Fantastic goal at the end from him too.

Zico was Ronaldinho's idol I believe, and for good reason, such talent and his eye for a pass plus his dribbling (and of course free kicks) were great.

Was that Socrates that tackled Zico towards the end? It was a world class tackle, thats for sure.

Alex, if your intrested check out part 1 of this thread. Probably on the 2nd page now.

Zico is one of my all time favourite players. I was going to vote for him.

But seeing the Zico-fest already here I voted Socrates.

As for why he deserves the praise, well they don't get much more technical for big men. Socrates was elite at everything he did, on the pitch and off it. He was the beating heart of any side he played in, the pillar you looked for to win the game.

Had a cracking shot. Seriously his shot was mean and the first touch of a gentle lover. He dictated play too even though he looked like a centre forward.

But honestly if you could ask him who he thought was better he would tell you Zico was lol

Also I'd like to add that the love affair these two players had with their clubs Corithians and Flamengo should be an example to all players.

Zico played for Flamengo like someone in the stands would. That commitment is what separates the GOATS from the pretenders imo.

Didn't vote but if I did it would be for Socrates.I love complete midfielders and guys who just look like they have time on the ball to kill.

Zico may have been the better player but Socrates just looked classier....it's not a solid reason....but playing style attracts me more than effectiveness.I don't really like dribbler's just too jerky and sometimes they look hassled.

You just see how Socrates looks when he touches the ball....he just moves so languidly and fluidly it's amazing.

Keep in mind that we are voting for who played better in that particular game.

Anyway when put in context I don't see what more Socrates could have done, Flamengo were beasts in the early 80's. Whenever Zico had the ball he had two three options to pass to at least.

Socrates could only provide the ball out wide because his team mates didn't do much to help. On the ball Socrates looked better but Zico looked much more dangerous. Zico's victory.

Yep, I agree. Like Cruyff in part 1, there isnt much more Socrates seemingly could have done. However, Zico, like Rivera had more end product, alot to do with the entire teams functions.

Good idea man, and it would be much easier too because the game is more individualised and there are tons of those types of videos.

I will do some research and have a think.
