Arsenal v Leeds Preview
Arsenal v Leeds United, Monday 9th January, 7.45pm, FA cup, Emirates Stadium
Sagna's wonder strike last season helped Arsenal see off Leeds in a replay
Arsenal hope to continue excellent FA cup tradition
Arsenal will be hoping to win the 2012 FA cup and end a 7-year trophy drought. The gunners have an excellent FA cup tradition winning the competition on 10 occasions, most recently in 2005. On that day Arsene Wenger's men drew 0-0 with Manchester United before beating Sir Alex Ferguson's side on penalties. Arsenal first won the competition in 1930, when they beat Huddersfield Town 2-0.
Leeds United well-placed for play-offs
Leeds United currently sit in 8th place in the Championship with 38 points from their 25 league games thus far. Simon Grayson's side are just 1 point outside the play-off places and will hope to return to the Premier League for next season come May. Leed's most recent game saw 'the whites' see off 10-man Burnley 2-1 in injury time on Tuesday.
Repeat of last season's 3rd round
It came as quite a surprise when Arsenal were paired with Leeds United in the FA Cup 3rd round draw. This is because the gunners met the 1972 winners in last season's competition at the same stage. Arsenal had to qualify for the 4th round via a replay, after the Championship side drew 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium. Cesc Fabregas's last minute penalty cancelled out Robert Snodgrass's second-half penalty. In the replay at Elland road, goals from Samir Nasri, Bacary Sagna and Robin Van Persie finally saw off the plucky premier league hopefuls.
Match Facts
* Arsenal have made it past the third round in each of the last 15 seasons in the FA Cup, a longer run than any other side.
* The Gunners last lost in the third round in 1996, drawing 1-1 at home to Sheffield United before losing 0-1 at Bramall Lane.
* Arsenal have lost only one of their last 35 FA Cup games at home under Arsène Wenger: 0-1 against Leeds in February 1997 (W23 D10 L1).
* Thierry Henry scored 11 goals in 11 games against Leeds in all competitions, including four in his last appearance against them at Highbury.
* This will be the 15th meeting between the sides in the FA Cup: so far Arsenal have won six, drawn seven and lost two.
* Arsenal have netted at least three goals in four of their last five matches against Leeds United (in all competitions).
Team News
Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will play "a strong side" but will rest "one or two" including Robin Van Persie. Gervinho has left for the African Cup of Nations, but Marouane Chamakh does not leave for the competition until Tuesday.
Kieran Gibbs, Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen, Andre Santos, Carl Jenkinson, Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere are all injured. Johan Djourou is suspended. Thierry Henry and Park Chu-Young will be in the squad.
Leeds
Patrick Kisnorbo, Robert Snodgrass and Jonny Howson are out, but on-loan Spurs winger Andros Townsend has been given permission to play. Alex Bruce is struggling to be fit, but Tom Lees and Darren O'Dea are available after injury.
Arsenal subs - Szczesny Song Ramsey Benayoun Walcott Henry Park
Prediction
Arsenal made heavy work of this tie last season. We had more than enough chances to win the game to avoid the replay we eventually won. A replay in this month is the last thing we need with the likes of Manchester United coming up. Wenger said he will play strong side and I think with the return of Henry and the packed crowd, this will rally the team. Arsenal's extra class should tell come the full-time whistle. Need to avoid a replay, and I think we will.

Great preview Sam.
I think Chamakh will get the start and Henry will come on to finish the game off.
3-1 victory with Henry scoring the 3erd one.
Is this game going to be televised?

Squillaci at the back and Chamakh upfront means we're toothless in attack and armourless in defence
Looks like it's going to be the Arsenal way once again

Re: Arsenal v Leeds Preview
Nice job Sam
why Gradel has played only 4 matches this season? he was one of their better players in last season match while Denilson started
also Snodgrass is their 2nd best goal scorer good that he is out
we had so many chances via corners played in to edge of 6 yard box
lets see if we can get the best of them this time
Arteta/Per/Kos all defo need rest
i think Park needs to start on left side and we can use Arsha as CAM to play in between the lines this is only championship side
Ryo and Titi both lack match sharpness but can come off the bench in 2nd half

Great job Sam.
Really looking forward to this match, Henry's turn to shine and I reckon this'll be the last chance of a few players like Arshavin, Chamakh and Squid.
And the match is gonna be televized (Al Jazeera 3, 5)

Where's Benayoun in your starting line-up? Surely he'll play over Arteta.

Benayoun Coq Rosicky a bit too attacking aint it?
Arteta trained all week with the likes of Coq - think he will play
Re: Arsenal v Leeds Preview
Nico Yennaris trained with the Arsenal first-team today. Could be involved v #LUFC given full back issues.

Too attacking? Not really. 4-2-3-1 with Rosicky and Coquelin as the two.
Bare in mind this is Leeds we're playing, not United, City, Chelsea, etc. Think we can afford to take a couple of risks with the starting line-up.
Arteta needs rest.

The same Leeds who drew with us at Emirates last year with Rosicky putting in a poor display.
Re: Arsenal v Leeds Preview
afc team that beat Leeds 3-1 in replay lst season: Szczesny; Sagna Koscielny Djourou Gibbs; Denilson Song; Bendtner Nasri Arshavin; Chamakh
Re: Arsenal v Leeds Preview
Rosicky played poor last year, so we shouldn't play Benayoun?
You'd be hard pressed to actually find a player that did play well in that game. It was a poor performance all round. I'm not underestimating Leeds or anything, but I just don't see the need to risk Arteta. He's not missed a league game since he's arrived, so the cup games are the only opportunities he'll get for rest.

Re: Arsenal v Leeds Preview
great preview Sam ...thnx 4 sharing !lol..i didn't knew that b4..You're a Leeds player :?: good luck man..trololol.....just kidding...
Well, can't wait to see Henry performing tonight ,then 2 give my opinion about loaning him...should we or not ,anyway Ryo shouldn't send to another needless loan..IMO ! i'd love to see him playing also but !
-n finally we have Ozyakup what da hell Wenger signed Park then
Maybe a bit off topic! but Honestly I'm very optimistic about young -future- talented players we have....but i'm not satisfied as much with current squad n performances in general ! Hope 4 a win tonight .. come on Henry

I'm not picking my team in my preview, I pick the team that I think will play. Hey you might be right, who knows? I actually think you are right.
Re: Arsenal v Leeds Preview
Reading on goal (I know) that this is another potential lineup and I really do not like it. Defense is very weak and Kos and Song will be spending all game trying to cover for the back line and GK. Do think that the front 3 could be interesting though, with the change of adding Park in the center, chamakh on the left and Beny on the right. Chamakh is not even a poor mans RVP and he has just not worked in the center this year probably do to the lack of a CAM. Adding Benny to the right adds needed experience and might as well see if Park can produce anything in the center. AOC in the midfield to me is interesting also. Could add creativity that we have been missing this year.
