Messi is the antithesis of the Cruyff game. Cant play our game with him. So the team is better off with a pragmatist like Valverde.

They are good at keeping the ball but on top of that what made it work was Iniesta and Xavi could distribute final balls like candy. With Iniesta being an all time great dribbler on top of it. With Alves being able to dish out 20 assists as well like an elite attacking midfielder. Just being good under pressure is not enough to play that way when you only distribute the ball from side to side.

We have had this discussion before and I maintain that Messi is the only obstacle to us being able to play the Cruyff way. How many assists did Xavi have once Messi moved central and basically stopped moving off the ball altogether in 2012. Not a lot. Arthur and FDJ might not be Xavi and Iniesta but they are the two best midfield prospects in the world. FDJ is a great dribbler and can break the lines with his dribbling. He is not Iniesta level but then the Don was a GOAT dribbler from midfield.

Passing, FDJ is a wonderful passer and Arthur has shown that he can play the final pass. He dwells on the ball a bit too much but that is only partly his fault. What the hell is he supposed to do when Messi is standing there 5 yards from him and Suarez is surrounded by 4 players.

Compare Pep's City. Who do they have in midfield? De Bruyne. He is not a better dribbler than FDJ. Gundogan. Again not a better dribbler. It works because City have outstanding movement. You think the one trick pony De Bruyne's cross from the overlap will work at Barca with Messi. Hell no!

FDJ and Arthur are not the problem. Messi is. Get him the hell out and we can go back to playing the Cruyff way.

Maybe one trick was an exaggeration but look at all his assists. Either he overlaps into space or Mahrez does creating space on the right hand side. De Bruyne whips it in for Aguero or Jesus to score. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.
Gundogan has definitely had the better career but we were talking about dribbling.

Did you just leave out the Silvas because it would go against your argument? Bernardo is a phenomenal dribbler.

You can play the Cruyf way but you will never reach the level you had with Xavi, Iniesta and Messi.

That Barca team was a goat team first because of the talent. then the way they played.
