Quran burning: Obama apologizes

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Barack Obama has written a letter formally apologizing for the burning of copies of the Quran at a coalition military base in Afghanistan, the Afghan president's office said Thursday, amid reports that two American troops had been shot dead.

A man dressed as an Afghan government soldier killed the soldiers and wounded four others during a protest about the burning of Islamic holy books that had been used by detainees held at the Bagram military base, a police officer and a provincial Afghan official told NBC News.

There have been violent protests every day since the news of the Quran desecrations emerged on Tuesday in what has become a public relations disaster for foreign forces in Afghanistan.

A statement from President Hamid Karzai's office said the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan had delivered the letter from Obama Thursday. (Cont.)

Apparently the burning was unintentional. Even if it was intentional it wouldn't justify killing those who took part in it. Baffles me that burning a couple of books (which billions of copies exist around the world) can lead to such havoc ... And make the U.S. president apologize over (presumably) an unintentional act. Burning any kind of literature is pathetic but it shouldn't ever lead to this kind of chaos or murder.

Doesn't help at all that the Afghanis hate us because we're occupying their country as well. They hate us in the same way all occupied peoples hate invaders.

Now this will only harden the already super-conservative, uber Christians in the military that will want to go "kill some hajis". It's only going to escalate from here I think.

Why does he have to say anything? Books were burned. Get over it. Everyone always wants to point out freedom of speech with all these Occupy protests among other things. If someone wants to burn some books to make a statement, that's their right.

If a new Leadership comes in... expect US to go deeper into debt.... because all of them expect Paul want to go to war with Iran.....
