Liverpool have announced they have reached an agreement with French side Evian for the transfer of Christian Poulsen.

The Danish holding midfielder arrived at Anfield with a strong reputation but failed to make an impact at Anfield under Roy Hodgson or Kenny Dalglish.

Liverpool have announced they have agreed a deal with Ligue 1 newcomers Evian - for whom the deal would represent something of a coup - and Poulsen can now discuss terms with a view to completing the move.

"Liverpool FC have tonight confirmed that they have reached agreement with Evian Thonon Gaillard for the transfer of Christian Poulsen," said a statement.

"The French side have now been given permission to talk to the Denmark international."

Was hoping for a few upsets with Sunderland at home to Chelsea, Bolton at home to Man United and Stoke at home to Liverpool.
Guess I can live with one from three.

Man City and Man United are clearly away from the rest of us. They are on another level at the minute destroying everything that comes in their way.

However, I remember Chelsea's start last season led to no trophies by the end of it so it means very little right now.

But by keeping Tevez and signing Aguero and Nasri, City are now a superb force.

As for United, they are certainly past the "they miss ronaldo and tevez" era.

Massive three points considering the good form of rivals.

Lots of catch up to do in the next coming months but one game at a time is the only and best way to reach the success.

Rival Watch - Page 8 Empty Re: Rival Watch

Post by Sri Fri Oct 28, 2011 7:22 am

Manchester City have surprised Arsène Wenger with their near-perfect start to the season.

Roberto Mancini's team are five points clear at the top of the Premier League table after winning eight and drawing one of their first nine fixtures. Their most impressive result came last weekend - a 6-1 win at city rivals Manchester United.

That Old Trafford thrashing underlined City's title credentials and, although Wenger expects the leaders to eventually suffer lows as well as highs, he has been extremely impressed by them.

"Manchester City have had a tremendous start," he told Arsenal Player.

"You didn't expect them to start as strongly as they did, but it is still early in the season. Every team will go through difficult patches. Hopefully we have had our part and we can move up now.

"In the first eight to 10 games you can see the first trends in the league coming out and that is what it is at the moment. It looks like Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, and hopefully us, will be there.

"City's win at Man United couldn't be stronger," he added. "I don't take too much importance in a result like that because it is always explainable by special circumstances. When you have 10 men you have to chase the game and of course you open yourselves to counter-attacks.

"I think Man City had seven shots on target and they won 6-1, that means every opportunity they had was a clear one like United had against us. We tried to attack with 10 men and we conceded four goals in the last 20 minutes. But at the end of the day, apart from the emotional aspect of the result, it is not of great significance.

"It is amazing how easily they score goals at the moment. That means they must be a force going forward and everybody in the league has to deal with that."

Teams that can qualify on matchday 6:

Group A:

Fixtures:
Manchester City v Bayern Munich
Villarreal v Napoli

• Napoli will progress to the last 16 if they beat Villarreal in their last group game. They will also go through regardless of their result if Manchester City fail to beat Bayer Munich.
• Manchester City can only advance to the last 16 if they beat Bayern Munich and Napoli fail to win at Villarreal.

Group B:

Fixtures:
Lille v Trabzonspor
Inter v CSKA Moscow

• Trabzonspor will progress to the last 16 if they beat Lille on matchday six. A draw will be enough provided CSKA Moscow fail to win at Inter.
• Lille can only advance to the last 16 if they beat Trabzonspor.

Group C:

Fixtures:
Basel v Manchester United
Benfica v Otelul Galati

• Manchester United will progress to the last 16 as long as they avoid defeat to Basel in the final group game. They can only top the group if they win and Benfica fail to beat Otelul Galati. A draw will be enough if Benfica lose.
• Basel will advance to the last 16 if they defeat Manchester United. They can still win the group but only if they beat United and Benfica fail to win against Otelul Galati.

Group D:

Fixtures:
Ajax v Real Madrid
Dinamo Zagreb v Lyon

• Ajax will be guaranteed a spot in the last 16 if they avoid defeat to Real Madrid on matchday six. They can also go through even if they lose (and Lyon win), provided they maintain their superior goal difference to Lyon in the final group standings.
• Lyon can only advance to the last 16 if they beat Dinamo Zagreb (and Ajax lose to Real Madrid) by a significant margin to overtake Ajax on goal difference in the final group standings.

Group E:

Fixtures:
Chelsea v Valencia
Genk v Bayer Leverkusen

• Chelsea will progress to the last 16 if they beat Valencia on matchday six. A 0-0 draw will also be enough. They can go through as group winners if they beat Valencia and Bayer Leverkusen fail to win at Genk.
• Valencia will advance to the last 16 if they defeat Chelsea. A draw with a 1-1 scoreline or higher will be enough. They can go through as group winners if they beat Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen fail to win at Genk.
* If Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea and Valencia all finish with nine points in the group, Bayer will be ahead as they have six points to Chelsea and Valencia's five in matches between the three teams.

Group F:

Fixtures:
Olympiakos v Arsenal
Borussia Dortmund v Marseille

• Marseille will progress to the last 16 if they win at Borussia Dortmund on matchday six. They will also go through as long as they match Olympiakos' result against Arsenal.
• Olympiakos can only advance to the last 16 if they beat Arsenal and Marseille lose at Borussia Dortmund. A draw will be enough if Marseille lose by exactly 2-0*, or by three goals or more.
* (based on criteria vi. of the tie-breaker, Olympiakos will qualify by having scored more goals in all group games as goal difference will be levelled)

Group G:

Fixtures:
Porto v Zenit St Petersburg
APOEL v Shakhtar Donetsk

• Zenit St. Petersburg will progress to the last 16 if they avoid defeat to Porto. They can go through as group winners if they beat Porto and APOEL fail to win against Shakhtar Donetsk.
• Porto will advance to the last 16 if they beat Zenit St. Petersburg. They can go through as group winners if they defeat Zenit and APOEL lose to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Chelsea will progress to the last 16 if they beat Valencia on matchday six. A 0-0 draw will also be enough.

But they're on equal points, and have a lower goal difference .__.
How's that work?

How's that work?

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group
matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings (in
descending order):
a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the
teams in question;
b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams
in question;
c) higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the
teams in question;
d) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches
played among the teams in question;
e) if, after having applied criteria a) to d), two teams still have an equal
ranking, criteria a) to d) are reapplied to determine the final ranking of the
two teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria f) to h)
apply;
f) superior goal difference from all group matches played;
g) higher number of goals scored from all group matches played;
h) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question,
as well as its association, over the previous five seasons

Head-to-head. The aggregate score over both games would be 1-1, with Chelsea having an away goal, thus they would have head-to-head surperioty if they draw 0-0.

However, if the score is 1-1, then the aggregate score becomes 2-2, with both aways goals cancelling each other out. In this case, it goes down to goal difference. Chelsea would have +6, Valencia +8. Hence, Valencia will go through.

Goal difference only becomes relevant if the head-to-head record between two teams is the same.

So the EPL stands at:

Man City 35
Man Utd 30
Spurs 28
Newcastle 26
------------
Chelsea 25
Liverpool 23
Arsenal 23

We are in a good position considering our start to the season. A couple of wins in our next 2 epl games against Wigan and Everton and we could be in top 4. Must win next 2.

Right. Man Utd lost at home to Crystal Palace in the league cup after extra time.

Liverpool won 2-0 against Chelsea last night, inspired by an emotional Bellamy, iirc.

If only we had won last night, I'd've given us a good chance in this competition.
