Sure.  He literally carried France through Spain, then Brazil and Portugal.  Played very well in the final too against Italy other than the final incident. Playing 4 great teams like that in elimination rounds and dominating was special.

But you have to put Mbappe's last world cup as one of the best if not the best.

8 goals, including a hat trick in the final.  R9 also had 8 in 2002 but then you need to back to 1970 with Gerd Muller to find anyone who scored as many.

His hat trick in the final hadn't happened since 1966 by Geoff Hurst of England.  Literally brought France back from the dead on his own.  Almost won it too in the last second of overtime. That was the best world cup final (or any final) that I have ever seen in terms of national teams.

Zidane 06 good shout, not so sure about Mbappe 22 because i know there were lots of discussions of how Mbappe wasn't even the best player for France before the final, with Griezmann as usual getting a lot of shouts. But yea Mbappe basically was the reason that final ended up being competitive, and he almost single-handedly won it.

- Excluding the penalties he didn't create, scored only one goal from open play when the game was almost done an dusted.
- For a playmaker didn't create as much, only registered 12 chances created which is a lot less than other playmakers Cruyff 74 (36), Pele 70 (28), Maradona 86 (27), Messi 14 (23). Again watching the games confirm what statistics already pointed.
- The red card incident just about is the cherry on a hype crusted and half hollow cake.

For me WC22 Argentina was just a better team, getting more out of Messi. WC14 Messi had to do most of the advancing himself, and although Lautaro was channeling his inner Higuain, there was no good midfield, nor an Alvarez type of player there. And Argentina in WC14 was still just a Higuain 1on1, or off-side goal away from the title, the chances which Messi actually helped to create.
