To be fair, Barcelona are in their plain right here. yes they are not a prison, but Messi has negotiated a pay increase 9 times in the past 15 years or so, that's crazy.

So you can't just look at it from Messi's point of view. Him leaving this abruptly without any compensation put their sporting project in a precarious position.

Now it makes sense why they signed Griezmann. That clause that Messi can walk out at any time every year is a terrible sword to hold over your club.

Not as precarious, because in a "normal" summer, you have time to sign players. La liga starts in less than 3 weeks. Keeping him for another year allows them to remain competitive while they plan for what's next.
