For me top 5 is: Matip, Koscielny, Van Dijk, Alderweireld, Mustafi/Vertonghen/Ilori

Otamendi barely misses out.

Have Liverpool kept a single clean sheet this season?

Clean sheet requires a top defensive unit with holding midfielders protecting their back 4 and class keepers.

In this thread we are talking about individual CBs and what they bring.

Having Mignolet as your keeper, Moreno as your LB, and Henderson protecting you by himself isn't really the best advantage for Matip and Lovren.

I love Matip, We've had nothing like him till now. Could call him a mix between Mertesacker and Pique.

On topic: It'll be a Spurs player because they've conceded just 3 so either Alder or Vertonghen, With Ashley Williams in 3rd spot.

Too soon to decide either way, Just 6 games in.

Best CB based on everything is still Kompany IMO

I voted for Alder, mostly because he is one of the main reasons Spurs are so good defensively, but also because it's too soon to tell on most of the new players in the EPL.

But you're right, Terry, Cahill, Mert et al. are no longer up there, the guard is changing.

So far it's Koscielny, with Mustafi second place.

Matip barely started off his career in the Prem and now he is the top CB in it (:

Illori, Shawcross and David Lulz on the list and yet no Blind

Anyway my top 5 would be.
1.Alder
2.Kos
3.VVD
4.Vertong
5.Williams

Huth(declining tho) and Smalling honorable mentions.

How do you rate Blind, He's not a CB and he keeps proving it with the goals you concede. Just because he puts in a 8/10 other than a goal leading mistake does not make him a good defender. Smalling needs to get in there asap

He IS a defender. He might not have been one in the past. But now he is. Tell me the last time he played in the midfield.
He has to be counted among the CB/LB list now.

Yea he has committed mistakes lately, but if you take over a period, he has been one of the most consistent players in the league. I am not saying he is the best. But shouldnt he be included at least in that list which has guys like Illori in it ? Probably McAgg forgot.

This is similar to the period when Carrick played CB or Lucas plays CB. They'll do well because they have the defensive attributes to do it, Plus it'll look better becuase you don't expect them to do well in an alien position. But those mistakes they make are what defines them. They are supposed to be making those mistakes further up the field ie in midfield.

Although Matip has impressed, it's too early to hype him up like this. Painfully obvious he's the reason McAgger made the thread.

If I had to name the best, it would be between Smalling and Van Dijk for me, with Alderweireld and Koscielny the closest to them.

McAgger is asking about the best CB of this season right ? Smalling hence wont come into the equation. His exploits were all last season. He's only played like 2 games this season.

Well, it's kinda pointless to discuss who's been the best in just six games. Rather talk about which CBs people rate the best.

Of course it counts.

I didn't bring Mustafi up. Didn't vote for him either.

Haven't even hyped him on twitter or anything yet, becaue I'm reasonable.

Considering this season is too short to make a legitimate argument( for example Otamendi has looked great so far but was utter crap last season)

So based on that logic Alderweireld seeing as he was the best CB in the league last year by a considerable distance, although i will revisit this as the season takes shape.

Top 5 IMO is

1) Matip
2) Sakho
3) Lovren
4) Klavan
5) Firmino

On a defense that's 10th in goals allowed no less...

I think that, rightly so, Liverpool fans expected a complete defensive disaster when the season started given the players in the back 4.  Since the defense is middle of the pack as opposed to utter crap, it gives a false sense of achievement.

Trust me...  I've felt much the same way about Real Madrid in the past (not now). OM is too crap on defense to compare (if a defender has a pulse, I'm happy with OM ).  I'm not criticizing it.  I just recognize the symptoms lol.

Having best CB doesn't necessarily equate to having the best defense.

Alderweireld has Dier-Wanyama two tank DMs protecting him (Last season it was Dier-Dembele). Has a world class keeper who is one of the best in the world in Lloris. Has an amazing partner who he has played since he was 15 years old at Ajax. Their partnership is telepathic almost having played so long. And two of the best fullbacks in the league.

Any good CB would look like a world beater in a defensive system like that.

Matip has thus far been stuck with Mignolet in goal. Hendo protecting him in DM by himself Moreno at LB and now makeshift winger at LB in Milner. And Lovren and Klavan partnering him, neither of whom are ideal partners for him long term.
