Is Suárez the Uruguayan GOAT ?
So, i have been thinking about this for quite a while already, since i cannot remember a Uruguayan player of Suárez's caliber, i thought it could be a interesting discussion, so here comes some facts:
* Best striker in the world for nearly about 3 years.
* World Cup semi-finalist, being essential in the campaign (best Uruguayan performance in 40 years). Didn't play in the defeat against the Netherlands, suspended as you all probably remember the story.
* Currently third best player in the world, only behind the GOAT and a potential Brazilian GOAT.
* Won the only Champions League he disputed, being absolutely decisive in the most important matches.
* Ripped Premier League apart, almost carried a weak team to the title.
So, is he the best Uruguayan player ever?

Re: Is Suárez the Uruguayan GOAT ?
Interesting question indeed
He is definitely in top 5 but the problem is that most great Uruguayan players played from 20s-80s lol. No idea how they actually were but based on reputation alone Enzo Francescoli seems to be the one who people say was Uruguayan's best player in history. Specially considering he won 3 Coppa Americas with them
I think when Suarez retires he will be the GOAT. He has already surpassed the likes of Cavani, Recoba and Forlan.

He surpassed them by a longshot even before playing for Barcelona, imo.

Sorry, don't wanna belittle his merits, but i don't think you can compare football of the 30's with nowadays, it barely was the sport that we know today.

Well in that notion every player playing today is goat for his country. No thread or explanations needed.Socur Toxanarosa wrote:Harmonica wrote:You no heard Jose Nasazzi?

Not really, the situation must be analyzed, the player's accomplishmens in the respective context, just happens that the 30's is just TOO far away.

And Nasazzi's accomplishments murder that of Suarez, relatively as of now. Suarez still has time though to catch up.Socur Toxanarosa wrote:Not really, the situation must be analyzed, the player's accomplishmens in the respective context, just happens that the 30's is just TOO far away.

Only if you ignore the context, he could have been the "Ballon d'Or" 1920-1930 and i still would not put him in equal footing, but that's me, fair enough if you think otherwise.

The context is to be the best player on the pitch, and that Nasazzi was more than Suarez as of now.Socur Toxanarosa wrote:Harmonica wrote:And Nasazzi's accomplishments murder that of Suarez, relatively as of now. Suarez still has time though.

If we look the context, Luis Suarez isn't even the best Luis Suarez yet.

Suppose an emerging new sport, it becomes popular in my city and i'm champion and the MVP of important championships in the early years = That's Nasazzi context.
Decades later it has become infinitely more complex in all aspects and practiced throughout the whole country(a big one); someone managed to equal the achievements of Suarez, or something equivalent.
So, do you really think the first deserves to be regarded higher?

Re: Is Suárez the Uruguayan GOAT ?
Dont really know much bout francescoli tbh. But to my eyes, he's done enough to be in the conversation at least.
Best striker in the last 8 years imo. Would really love to know where suarez ranks among some elite strikers of recent memory, like henry, rvn, schevchenko and ibrahimovic in some posters book on here. Really really Incredible player.

Bit higher than Henry, who was the best striker of the century. Most of the others were very good at scoring but didn't have the capacity to destroy teams by themselves on a regular basis. I think Agüero could be up there too if he was not made of glass.

Re: Is Suárez the Uruguayan GOAT ?
My (only) barometer for measuring Uruguayan greats is Enzo Francescoli. Considering the amount I saw of him (in and around 1986 WC), Suarez have surpassed him. And oh, Cavani is worse than Ruben Sosa .

Imo Aguero is not up there with Henry, Eto'o. Suarez, Sheva ... Too much injuries.

This thread
Schiaffino is the best according to everyone and Suarez would need another Maracanazo to surpass him.

Suarez will need to still catch Cavani after today's performance.

Re: Is Suárez the Uruguayan GOAT ?
I read some articles also about this black player, Andrade, recently. (Not sure what was the occasion)
Quite apparently Uruguay had a number of supremely talented players in the first half of the 20th century.
We can't check how good 'exactly' they were but it's a tired enterprise IMO to try to pinpoint the 'greatest ever'.
