To be fair, the quality of defenders and the defensive work of midfielders in the modern game is hardly any better than it was back then. I know I'd take Tony Adams past his prime over pretty much any other defender who's currently active Laughing

I don't know why people always think that "right now is better than it has ever been before".

Off course they are. Look at FC Barcelona 1992 Champions League final defense:

None of them would get on Barça's first team in the last 8 years. And only Ferrer would have a shout at some top club (Koeman too but as a midfielder).

Off course, there was Cafu, but now there's Alves, there was Maldini, and now there's Thiago Silva, etc.

The thing is that the attacking players have improved their quality a lot, which is very noticeable if you watch football from the early 90s, and defenders have a much harder time too because of the quality of the pitches, boots and footballs, all making it easier to attacking football.
