I've been doing well, I'm in my second semester of sophomore year at uni. I got a job on campus last semester and I'm treasurer of the italian club here as well as writing for our soccer blog. Forgot to mention, I got nominated for new volunteer of the year for my work at the local historical society that I volunteered at all summer! Gotta declare my history major soon as well!

How have you been kicky? You still kick rocks nd shit?

Awesome man! I need to decide a specific part of history but I'm probably gonna focus on some part of European history, just need to decide whether its Roman or Medieval, etc

Not sure honestly! I'm taking italian courses right now so if I master the language, that would be a plus for possibliy doing work regarding italian.

I honestly am not sure whether I want to be a normal high school history teacher or go for a PhD. What do you think about your current career path going for it?

Also I'm curious, what exactly do you do with a PhD in rocks? Are you planning on being a professor?

Fair enough, it would help.

As for the PhD thing, it's a real commitment, so if, by the time you get to making the choice, you don't think you will enjoy it, or think it will be tedious, I would say don't do it. Alternatively, if you are really enjoying your studies and want to do it for longer, then go for it, for me, it's been a blast and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's not easy though, and you do have to put it first, otherwise you will fall behind. I mostly chose mine because I enjoyed what I was doing, not because of the current (albeit) poor job market. It factored into my choice but wasn't the main factor.

I can't imagine history based jobs fluctuate as much as Geology jobs (oil & gas and mining) so I think you should make the choice purely on your enjoyment of the studies.

I currently work on finding out how long ago certain rocks within South Australia exhumed (moved upwards through the crust) to the surface through a variation of Uranium/Lead dating.

I am not sure what I will do at the end, maybe more research, but I could always take a desk job in oil and gas or a site job in the mines.

You will make a lot of money. Though I'm not sure of exactly how much a PhD in geology gets you as far as lucrative jobs in oil or natural gas type stuff. That being said, I guess things there are probably slowing down since the global decline in oil prices. Of course, you would be in an awfully boring and cold state, but you would only be, depending on where in North Dakota, 15-10 hours from yours truly hmm

We could hang out on weekends.
