Re: WC Statistics Thread
It doesn't look too different in numbers from the Last 16 in 2010, where Europe and South America are concerned:
Europe (6): Germany, England, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain
CONMEBOL (5): Argentinia, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay
CONCACAF (2): Mexiko, USA
Asia (2): South Korea, Japan
CAF (1): Ghana
Still the semi finalists were Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Uruguay, that is 3 from Europe and 1 from South America.

Re: WC Statistics Thread
Would this open up more spots for certain continents? is there some sort of point system that works similar to CL?

Re: WC Statistics Thread
I love CONCACAF, but not sure we actually need any more spots.
Honduras are a decent side plagued by a few key injuries going into the World Cup.
I think with Panama, Canada, and Jamaica improving will only make that fourth spot slowly get better. I was particularly impressed with Panama through qualifying before Zusi saved Mexico.

Re: WC Statistics Thread
Well this year only one of Colombia, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil can make the semifinals so we're unlikely to see how these would do against top European opposition. A mini Copa America.rwo power wrote:It doesn't look too different in numbers from the Last 16 in 2010, where Europe and South America are concerned:

Re: WC Statistics Thread
On the other hand, it is likely that both Argentina and Brazil go through to the semis and then play against a European top team each, so there will be a direct match-up between UEFA and CONMEBOL after all.

Re: WC Statistics Thread
Karim Benzema with 2 assists? IIRC, kicker.de has him with 3 assists. Which is correct?
And by the way, I just mentioned Thomas Müller above as I sensed the start of a new round of Messi - CR7 bickering XD

wow interesting......so based on group performance, the best are playing each other. that makes this WC group selection completely justified...

As this was the original post of the thread, I thought I should post an update to this now.
Teams in QF based on continent:
UEFA = 4 teams (France, Germany, Holland, Belgium) of 13 (30.8%)
CONMEBOL = 3 teams (Brazil, Colombia, Argentina) of 6 (50%)
CONCACAF = 1 team (Costa Rica) of 4 (25%)
CAF = 0 teams of 5
AFC = 0 teams of 4
