Footballer dies after horror challenge by GK in Indonesian Premier League
A footballer has died from an injury suffered on the pitch following a horror challenge during an Indonesian Premier League match.
Persiraja striker Akli Fairuz was injured after taking a boot to the body from PSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rahman as the pair raced for the ball in the area.
Players, clearly incensed by the tackle, clashed on the pitch while the referee had to be moved away by security.
Frontman Fairuz was substituted but managed to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.
However, the attacker later took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted to hospital.
It was soon discovered that Fairus had suffered bladder leakage and, a few days after the match, passed away from his internal injuries.

As sad as this case is, it is actually surprising that not more footballers get seriously injured when crashing their heads together (could easily lead to brain hemorrhaging), get kicked into the face etc. For dangerous play with high kicks, the refs probably should be stricter with bookings and sendings off.

May be it's not a bad idea to make wearing head-gears mandatory.

Well that's a freak incident, sad to hear it.
I'm not sure about this, it's so difficult to draw the line. You can and should be allowed, too, to reach for a high ball with your leg. But if there's an opposition player nearby, you might get called for a high boot foul. Especially if you miss the ball. Yet if there's no opponent nearby, you can reach as high as you can with your leg. So where do you draw the line, how close the other player has to be?
Furthermore, these incidents where one player reaches for the ball with his boot and the other one with his head. They look dangerous and often the one using his leg gets called for a foul. Yet it feels a little wrong to me that there are restrictions on which body part you are allowed to reach for the ball with. Maybe the one going in with his head should know and accept the risk? Because, again, if there's no one around, you can get your leg up high. Drawing the line here is difficult and sometimes I see high-boot fouls called that just leave me thinking "what was he supposed to do?"

@Art Morte
I was thinking of Sven Bender, for example, who already broke about every bone in his face (jaw, cheekbone etc) - that is, if a kick actually goes for the face (or an elbow check, too), then there should be stricter sanctions.

If a player knows the challenge they're going to make could cause an injury/is risky, then they shouldn't attempt it. Also there should be more severe consequences for attempting challenges such as that.

The way the goalkeeper lunged for the ball is completely uncalled for. I mean look at where the ball is ffs.
He went in to take the player out.

Yeah.
If someone knows / follows if he's going to get some sort of punishment, post it here (duh).
