Manchester United to play mid-season friendlies?
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/feb/28/manchester-united-lucrative-friendlies-champions-league-europa-league
I don't know whether to laugh at United or cry at the state of top-level football if this is where it's come to. Play mid-season friendlies to make more money? Sad. I hope this doesn't materialize (but United still miss out on European competition).
Manchester United are poised to play a series of lucrative friendlies abroad next season to offset what could be a minimum £20m loss for failure to qualify for the Champions League and Europa League.
With United constantly offered multi-million-pound deals to play around the world in exhibition and testimonial games, the club hierarchy is confident of filling the financial void left by a dismal season, and has already started planning for the potential absence from European competition next term. David Moyes's side are in sixth, 11 points from a Champions League place.
With United having turned down a sizeable offer to play a friendly during their recent warm-weather break in Dubai, the prospective opposition could be against teams from the Middle East, China or America.

Will FA allow this? EPL doesn't have any mid-season/winter break, so those friendlies will lead to reschedule of some league and/or Cup games. Perhaps they will try to synchronize the friendlies with NT Friendlies.

They plan to play during the CL nights window.Basically trips to dubai tuesday night and return to PL matches on weekdays. With sky and BT regularly shifting their games to sat/sun/monday often this could turn farcical as well as comical.
Imagine playing in Dubai humidity in wednesday night and return to play PL games on saturday.Potentially worse than EL games.
Glazers
Seems they are in worse financial status than they like to reveal or admit.

ManUtd turning into the Harlem Globetrotters of World football? Although for that they probably need some players who can show off some special technical skills, too. ^^

If it's allowed then I don't see anything wrong with. I doubt they'll always play their best players anyway during those matches, would be a waste with league fixtures coming up on the weekend. It's best for business.

Nobody is going to pay big money for a friendly with a reserve side.
Friendly contracts not only generally specify the type of team to be sent, they actually name key players and how many minutes (minimum) they have to play for you to get the full fee.

20m loss from CL and god knows how much from sacking Moyes
desperate times
or you know, just capitalising on our status as the biggest brand in world football, it's a business for the glazers.

It's ridiculous how we're scraping the barrell to compensate for this virus' incompotence and disastrous season.
We shouldn't have to be in a position to be that desperate.
The Glazers should get rid of that clown asap, pay his release clause. The longer he is there, the more money they are set to lose out on anyways.

Actually I think that is pretty cool. How much does it cost, though? *curious*

That's rich coming from a Barca fan. Sigh.
Anyway, there is nothing wrong with this kind of setup as long as we play good football. If we still play crap total hoofball then that's where I snap.

Re: Manchester United to play mid-season friendlies?
I wonder would the "real" or serious Man United fans even like this if the club came for a mid-season friendly to their region. If I lived in China and Liverpool announced they're coming for a mid-season friendly there, I would be mostly annoyed, not excited. "Wtf you doing here in the middle of the season, you should be preparing for the next competitive match, ffs".

I could still call that a preparation. It's not like they have a CL match or something. A richer man's training session if you'd like.

Jet lag every week is even worse.
Europe is small, Friendlies in Europe would be easier but it wont generate shit, When you have 10 hours flights to Asia every week it counts, It'll show in the PL when they'll play on the weekend.
Look at us, We are ready every week with no European or domestic cup duties XD

What if they invite teams to OT!!! While the stands may remain half-empty (I wonder how many people would be interested to watch an all-stars team from MLS/A-J-K League), but part of that may be compensated by TV deals. Just don't think Mata & Kroos would be salivating at the prospect.

Why would anyone pay millions to play at OT

You can be sure the videos will be carefully selected beforehand.Lex wrote:That front row idea is pretty cool tbf, though I can see at least one person ruining it by flashing his nob
ATM Schalke have a similar project running to involve their fans as they can upload a portrait photo of themselves and buy a 4x4mm big "pixel" for 4.04 Euros that will show their portraits on the back number of their favourite player: http://mitspieler-s04.de/
