Greatest Football-city? Empty Greatest Football-city?

Post by AltoZ Fri Jul 12, 2013 1:27 pm

Me and mate had a discussion. Whats the greatest/biggest football city in the world? And why?

London? Madrid? Barcelona? Milan? Liverpool? Manchester? Turin? Buenos Aires? Rome? Glasgow? Rio? Munich? Birmingham? Sheffield? Moscow? Athens? Istanbul?

Dortmund I'd say. Sometimes the whole city seems to be yellow and black when the BVB play.

I think he meant in term of big clubs in one city.

For me it's London.

Oh, I misunderstood then, sorry.

Well, if you count the Ruhr metropolitan region as one city (and it basically is one city, as you can't discern where one of the towns starts and the other ends), it probably would be the Ruhr area with Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 (in Gelsenkirchen), MSV Duisburg, VfL Bochum, RW Oberhausen, RW Essen, SW Essen (the latter three nowadays rather small, but traditional clubs nonetheless), plus close by (no more than 30km) Bayer Leverkusen, Fortuna Düsseldorf and even Köln isn't too far away. ^^

Buenos Aires and it is not close.

From wiki: "Buenos Aires has the highest concentration of football teams of any city in the world (featuring no fewer than 24 professional football teams),[121] with many of its teams playing in the major league. The best-known rivalry is the one between River Plate and Boca Juniors. Watching a match between these two teams was deemed one of the "50 sporting things you must do before you die" by The Observer.[121] Other major clubs include San Lorenzo de Almagro, Club Atlético Huracán, Vélez Sársfield, Asociación Atlética Argentinos Juniors and Club Ferro Carril Oeste."

I would say Milan.. No city has two clubs bigger historically than AC and Inter to be honest

Who cares how many fodder/irrelevant clubs you have in the city :coffee:

Milan if I was going for sheer beauty of the city, but if I'm being honest the greatest football city would be London.

Other than Buenos Aires Laughing

River vs Boca is a better rivalry than the scrub rivalry of Inter vs Milan (can you imagine River and Boca sharing a stadium? I can't), not to mention other notable rivalries such as San Lorenzo vs Huracan, and Buenos Aires has produced better talent than Milan (Di Stefano and Maradona vs Meazza and Maldini), we have hosted a WC final in the Monumental whereas both of Italy's finals were played in Rome. By any way you measure it Buenos Aires > Milan.
