North East of England = Spain
When Barca got spanked 4-0 in Munchen, I saw Madrid fans laughing their ass off, only to go through a 4-1 torture 24 hours later.
in parallel, Newcastle got spanked 6-0 on saturday, Sunderland forums were having a party and threads (HAVE WE EVER LOST BY 6 GOALS)...and boom ! 48 hours later it has happened.
This is hilarious.
relegation fight in PL though
just need Wigan to get AT LEAST 3 points from WBA/Swansea games next week, n then we're in for some treat.

Wigan 5 points from safety with 4 games to go, surely this time they're gone.

Not too sure about that, if NK were to drop a nuke on England well all know only Wigan Athletic would survive.Art Morte wrote:Wigan 5 points from safety with 4 games to go, surely this time they're gone.

Sunderland didn't lose by 6 goals, but I get the point you're trying to make.

They are playing 2 teams with nothing to play for (WBA, Swansea), Arsenal away (tough game, but they won it last year) and Villa at home.
All winnable on paper at least. I REALLY WISH THEY WON THIS WEEKEND. UGH

Re: North East of England = Spain
I do believe Wigan can take 5+ points from their 4 games, but the teams above them will likely still get some points, too. And just screwing up one winnable game might mean the curtains for Wigan.
Newcastle and Aston Villa perhaps with the toughest fixtures from the rest while Norwich aren't safe yet, either.

Wigan have 3 home games left. There's still a chance.

Newcastle can pick something up against West Ham and QPR, which should propel them to safety.

Away games, those, and Newcastle have won just once on the road. Obviously the QPR fixture is very winnable, though.

We can do a lot of things but we dont.... we are relying on Wigan not picking up 6 points.
Otherwise we are down, because we are not picking up another point.
Amazes me how few people realise how awful we are.

no they don't
2 home games left and 2 away
And those games are against Villa, Arsenal, Swansea, and WBA
They are DONE. As good as relegated. Specially since Arsenal are fighting for CL and Villa for relegation

It's not like the other teams won't pick up anymore points. 5 points at this stage could be a deep grave to climb out of. Although of course it's still possible.Great Leader Sprucenuce wrote:Wigan only need to win 2 games.... more than capable of doing so.

I would not bet against Wigan in a one-off on the last day, but they have to get there first

Re: North East of England = Spain
There are a lot of people here saying Wigan are as good as down. I'm just curious how many times we will say that before we realize that Martinez has an amazing talent for pulling points out of a certain anatomical area when it comes to the season run-in. That man and that club are escape artists. It doesn't matter how dour they play for the first 3/4 of a season. They always manage to come on strong at the end..
If Newcastle can manage a win or two draws, they may just be safe. Even though they've only won once away from home, they haven't played QPR away from home this season. If there's a club to play when you need away points, it's an already relegated QPR. Moreover, a draw against West Ham is far from out of the picture, especially with them being comfortably situated in mid-table.
The other side to this is that Sunderland and Aston Villa are far from out of the scrap. Though Villa looked good today, they've looked good before (admittedly not at this level) and capitulated in the next match.
Sunderland are every bit as stuck in the mire as Newcastle and Wigan after today's loss. They now have to face Stoke (H), Southampton (H) and Tottenham (A). Stoke are probably their best chance to pick up points, and that's coming up this weekend. Southampton and Tottenham will be a tough ask, regardless of some encouraging recent performances.
I know Mole is really pessimistic about the run-in, but a solitary strong performance against either West Ham or QPR should see them to safety. The key here is to see if Pardew can stay out of his own way. It's pretty simple. Play you best players in their natural positions, and don't go all Ranieri on the squad sheet. It's a relegation battle. This is not the time to shuffle up the squad if you're not forced.

Re: North East of England = Spain
Wigan have traditionally already turned on their relegation-beating form by this point. Their continued inconsistency and lack of results has them closer to relegation than in recent years and really, at this point their fate is out of their hands. It's not just about whether they can get results, but whether the clubs around them can. As such I think they're definitely favourites for the third relegation spot and I can't wait to hear Whelan's reaction if they do go down... though he'll probably just be happy that United won the title.
