I'm no expert, but I know as much as I need to so I can drink something that I know will taste good and will go with a particular meal in a restaurant. That being said, I'm not one of those wine snobs who think they're top stuff because they drink wine. Beer, cider, spirits, it's all good.

There's not much to it. Just try lots of different varieties and remember the names of which ones you like. And don't waste money on buying expensive stuff just because of it's price or fancy labelling, often cheap wine is very good value and tastes better.
