I think hurry up is sbrigati?
I really want to use musical terms like allegro, adagio, lento, ritenuto, ritardando, but I don't know which ones are verbs or nouns or whatever.

Forza, I'm just curious, I've started randomly saying molto bene so I just wanted to learn a few more words .
Benissimo and molto bene are both very good?
What's slow down/hurry up?
You've never seen or eaten Twizzlers? They are a type of strawberry flavored licorice. They are delicious

But how can you defend rugby 'scrubs like Johnny wilkinson kicking World Cup winning field goals' union?
Drop goals.
And it takes real skill to do that too, I've seen in happen in league as well.

It literally means 'slowly'. It also has meanings in other contexts, such as 'softly' e.g. when playing music. You don't pronounce it pe-AN-oe, like in English. Instead, pronounce it pyaano.
A piano (instrument) in Italian is "pianoforte" in case you were wondering.
"forza" only means "go" in the context of supporting a team or a race car, etc. As a noun, forza means strength or force.fatman123 wrote:Forza is go, so that's almost hurry up?

Yes, "sbrigati" is "hurry up" if you are talking to one other person. Note that the ending of the word changes depending on how many people you are talking to.
"allegro" means "cheerful" or "lively". That's why Milan's coach is Mr. Cheerful.
"adagio" is slow. "lento" also means slow. "lentissimo" means very slow.
"ritenuto" means different things depending on whether it is used as an adective or a verb. What did you want to use it for?
I suspect that with "ritardando" you're tying to say something about being late. "in ritardo" is probably the most common way of saying "late". "Sono in ritardo" means "I am late."

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Thanks, although I still don't know what slow down is .
I have no idea what I want to do with ritenuto and ritardando, I was just reeling musical terms off the top of my head. I remember receiving condescending glares during my exams because I couldn't pronounce the things properly .
If piano is slowly, is forte quickly then?

"Vai piano" is "go slowly" when talking to one other person.beatrixasdfghjk. wrote:Thanks, although I still don't know what slow down is .

"Veloce" is quick or fast. "Forte" can be used similarly but isn't as good a word to describe "fast" as "veloce". "Forte" is the adjective of the noun "forza", usually indicating strength, loudness or power.

I'm fluent enough to say what I want to say and understand most speech and text. I learnt Italian all though primary school and high school, but I've forgotten some since then because I don't use it much. I'm not fluent like a native Italian is though.Kick wrote:Are you fluent in Italian Forza?

Your parents didn't speak it around you when you were little, or you just forgot as you grew up?

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
I've forgotten some of it in the years since finishing high school. At the end of high school I was probably at my peak. Now I don't use it that much, so I'm very slowly forgetting some of the more technical aspects of the language. My parents are born here and rarely speak Italian (although they can). My grandparents do still speak in Italian quite a bit.beatrixasdfghjk. wrote:Your parents didn't speak it around you when you were little, or you just forgot as you grew up?

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
My fathers parents are/were (Grandfather passed away) Italian but did not teach my father. My brother and myself learned Portuguese (Brazilian mother) and English at the same time as children, however my Portuguese has diminished quite a bit since high school as well. I never got around to learning how to write/real, but I plan on getting on top of that in the near future. I didn't read/write in English much before my time on this forum and I have definitely seen improvements in my speech/grammar because of it.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
I must say that all the people on this forum who write in English as their second language are really impressive.
Unfortunately, Australia has a culture where most people don't consider learning another language. It's not seen as a valuable skill because people around the world speak English.
Much like you, Dom, I plan on getting on top of my Italian sometime in the near future. I enjoy reading and writing in Italian and it's extremely useful for looking at news to do with Milan and Italian football.

Something I often bring up to people in my life. It is not only an inspiration, but a motivation
The girl I am currently seeing speaks Portuguese (not Brazilian or Portuguese), so I hope we both get the opportunity to practice here and there (I can be quite self conscious when speaking, but I have grown quite comfortable with her.)

English is technically my third language, but I mostly forgot the first two, so it's basically my first language now .
