Re: SAF rates Lopez over Casillas
There's more factors to consider. In the games Casillas played, did the opposition have as many shots as the games Lopez played?
Did Real Madrid concede due to Casillas making less saves per game?
Not trying to discredit Lopez though, since he's done well.

Re: SAF rates Lopez over Casillas
ya the stats can be bolstered a little bit considering lopez likely had a lot more shots to deal with which increases the possibility for saves, and when saved increases the save percentage.
the interesting one for me is crosses claimed. its been no mystery that madrid have struggled with set pieces, crosses, and corners prior to lopez taking the reigns, but now it seems much less so.
but the stats are certainly one interesting perspective.

For once I have to concur with MT. How much shots did either keeper have to face to conjure a save? Also, and this is very much a fact, Casillas has never been good at claiming crosses which would make it understandable why he is just under the likes of Buffon, Khan, Schmeichel.

Re: SAF rates Lopez over Casillas
Doesn't make a difference because the % of shots saved is higher for Lopez than it is for Casillas, so irrespective of the amount of shots either received Lopez has been better than Casillas in that aspect. Of course this doesn't really cover the quality of those shots, which is a reasonable thing to question, but given the number of starts the quality is probably similar.Doc wrote:For once I have to concur with MT. I was gonna mention the whole "quality of saves" but in a statistical point of view, that is irrelevant. I don't disagree that Lopez has been better than Casillas this season, just pointing out that MT may have a point of some sort.

How many goals have each conceded? I guess Casillas not saving as many shots as Lopez would mean he conceded more.

Casillas' was better IMO, way harder, and closer to the goal. However great save.

Ferguson obviously forgot to take his morning alpraxin meds as him churning out comments like these is a testament to how senile he has grown in his old age.

Lopez this season has been terrific. I can't see how Casillas will get into the side with Lopez brilliant performances since coming in.
I think Lopez should be in the Spanish team instead of Reina. Has proved this, this season.

Considering De Gea is no scrub either I don't see what place Reina has at that squad at allThe Sanchez wrote:Lopez this season has been terrific. I can't see how Casillas will get into the side with Lopez brilliant performances since coming in.

Re: SAF rates Lopez over Casillas
Personally I think Iker Casillas has always been overrated. Very good goal keeper. But one of the greatest of all time? Please. I've watched him too much for that. He's not on the level of Buffon, Kahn, Schmeichel, Yashin, Maier, Zoff, or Banks. Take Iker Casillas away from Real Madrid and Spain and he'd be rated more accurately. He just gets that hype which takes him to ridiculous levels. It's the Real Madrid effect. Look at Varane. Talented, fine. But no player in the world would get hyped so much after a couple of great performances if he didn't play for Real Madrid. Iker Casillas has been getting that hype all his career. I even see that in games. Player joins Real Madrid and gets an immediate boost in ratings.

Re: SAF rates Lopez over Casillas
I love iker, and his off the pitch attitude besides his spats with mou is perfect.
But he is overrated, and I hate to say it. He is just too damn inconsistent. On form he is a monster, nothing, i mean NOTHING gets past him.
But he makes such dumb mistakes in easy games. It's painful to watch.

you understand iker has been playing for 14 years right? hes won everything you can win, its not like this is the first time he has been tested so i have no idea why you are comparing him to varane who is having a great FIRST season.
if he was truely 'over hyped' to the extent you describe he would have been beaten out in the national team which has been full of great keepers since he joined. or the club level. i mean you really think a club as powerful as real madrid wouldnt buy another keeper if iker wasnt any good?
your argument and comparison to varane is completely off base.

Re: SAF rates Lopez over Casillas
How is Casillas winning everything relevant to how good he is? He is by no means on the level of Buffon or Khan when it comes to pure goalkeeping ability, but his wonderful shot stopping and clutch performances for Madrid and Spain put him in the top tier, the exact same reason why ZZ is rated so highly despite his inconsistencies, CLUTCH ability.

Re: SAF rates Lopez over Casillas
i guess its somewhat pointless to argue this, these types of opinions are never swayed.
i will just explain the point you asked about though : How is Casillas winning everything relevant to how good he is? - well if you read my post you would see i explained that. being at the biggest club in the world and the most successful national team in the past 6 years obviously calls a question to your ability. you don't start and captain these teams without having to prove it every day to your coaches.
if iker wasnt good enough he would have been replaced. simple as that.
nitpick all the little mistakes you want, every goalkeeper has them, even buffon, khan, yashin, etc. but what it comes down to it is if you have watched him enough as i have you must realize his ability.

Iker has never lost a final he has participated in and correct me if I am wrong he has never conceded a goal in a final so he is definately the definition of clutch
