Assistant Managers
I have a few questions:
What is their main role?
Are they important?
Who might be the best nr.2 today?
etc etc...
P.s.
I'd like to discuss the Steve Bould situation later when I finish this Pizza.

Re: Assistant Managers
I assume their main role would be to help the main coach with tactics and to fill in when needed. Also, to give some advice to players during the game maybe, but I don't see that much.
Are they important? I'd say yes. It's definitely good to have someone with you who can do a job just as good as yours when you're absent. Some people say that Chelsea declined a couple of years ago because they sacked Ray Wilkins, so that could be an example of an assistant manager's importance.
Best nr.2 today? Difficult to tell, because we can't really feel their influence, but the best nr.2 in recent history is Di Matteo hands down. Took a Chelsea side that was in a dire state all the way to become European Champions. By far the best recent nr.2.

Re: Assistant Managers
Their role probably is to discuss tactics etc with the manager and pass on the managers instructions etc.

Re: Assistant Managers
Tbh I see them as vital part of the personal and of the team..
The manager is nothing without the right assistant he needs to pay attention to everything and see what the manager has missed. Pay attention to the details and also to what is happening when the manager can't see. To follow the whole game and give addvices to the manager.
they are like the wife in the marriage

Re: Assistant Managers
their role depends on how much involvement the head coach decides to have. they mainly lead team and individual training sessions and make recommendations as they are closer to the players than the coach.

Re: Assistant Managers
I see them as students as well, because quiet a few go on to be managers and probably spend some of the time learning from past managers.

Re: Assistant Managers
What are they responsible for?
It depends. It all depends on how much control the Ass. Man. is given from the head coach.
But usually , they are responsible for tactics and sometimes training .
Are they important ?
Of course. For lots of teams , they are everything tactically . A good assistant manager is able to give proper consultation and feedback to the man really in charge on team performances in realtime and post match. They are also important if the manager gets sent off or has to be absent from games.
Who is the best?
I don't know . However, I can state my opinion on who I think was the best, that is; Carlos Queiroz of course . If you ask me, in most of the Queiroz era,United were tactically and defensively sound and even more than that.We all know Fergie is an absolutely wonderful manager but he's not that great tactically, this is where Queiroz came in, he provided that tactical nous that was lacking. But Under Phelan I think we've seen a regression of some sort . Queiroz was far more superior to Phelan tactically , his approach was always an intricate one also.
