Group C: Spain vs Republic of Ireland discussion
Spain vs Republic of Ireland discussion.
14th June 2012.
What should Spain's lineup be? I don't think they should play as many midfielders as they did vs Italy.

They should go all out attack. At least 2 strikers. They know Trap will put the emphasis back onto defensive organisation after the Croatia game. The Irish will play on the counter and park the bus. It is imperative that Spain score first to open up the game.

Re: Group C: Spain vs Republic of Ireland discussion
I think 4-3-3 will be played and in good use. We will see the full affect of the Xaviniesta and Silva was played on the left and Navas on the right with either Torres or Llorente in the middle. Alonso at DM if 4-3-3 is played which should be played and should have been played against Italy

Del Bosque:
"Against Ireland we will play a number nine - though it depends what you understand by a number nine," he said.
"David Silva is a forward; Andres Iniesta plays like one, so does Cesc."

If they play like they did against Croatia (Ireland, that is), Spain will crush them.
If they can play like Trap wants them too, Spain might have a hard time breaking them. Fully expecting a comfortable win for Spain though.

The new age of Number 9's is upon us where players that were before considered as midfielders are now CF's
Screw Guardiola, Del Bosque is the true innovator
Seriously though if Iniesta plays a 9 lulz will be had.

Trapattoni may pull this off. The players have to do what he wants them to do.

Re: Group C: Spain vs Republic of Ireland discussion
Iniesta imo I thought has elements of a number nine better than Cesc. Expect Silva to be on the left and Iniesta to play as those two just love passing the ball with each other alongside the pssing king of Xavi. Will VDB play 4-3-3? Well I hope so as Im frustated with the lack of attacking options we have. Please, put Navas on the right and have Iniesta in the middle with Xavi and see the beauty of true football.

Torres should start, his forward runs worked well against Italy when he came on and they should work even better against Ireland.
Ireland will have the edge in the air, if they can get a few set pieces then they stand a chance of scoring.
I'd say 2 - 0 Spain.

Re: Group C: Spain vs Republic of Ireland discussion
I've talked about this alot, it's nice to see an article about it, even if it's goal.com
This article however, does not mention that we were blatantly cheated out of that tournament, with Iker making one miracle save after another against Korea, and two perfectly legal goals disallowed. We could've won that tournament, or at the very least get to 3rd place with a 21 year old goalkeeper carrying us on his shoulders.
Iker Casillas is currently playing in his sixth major tournament for Spain. The Real Madrid goalkeeper has widely been considered one of the world's best goalkeepers since making his debut under Jose Antonio Camacho in 2002, and is the undisputed choice between the sticks for La Roja.
And it was 10 years ago, against Thursday's rivals Ireland that Casillas cemented his legend status with Spain, saving three penalties in the World Cup second-round match to seal a place in the quarter-finals for La Roja.
So ahead of his next meeting with the Irish on Thursday, Goal.com looks, in chronological order, at the goalkeeper's heroic highlights with Spain over the last decade.
The World Cup in Japan and Korea saw Casillas' first memorable moments with the national side. The Madrid keeper, who was second choice behind Santiago Canizares, claimed the starting spot after the Valencia man severed a tendon in his foot in a freak domestic accident when he dropped a bottle of aftershave in the shower. Casillas, who just a month earlier had played a pivotal part in Madrid's Champions League success against Bayer Leverkusen after replacing the injured Cesar Sanchez in the latter stages of the final, also came in to the World Cup side via the back door - but made it count.
In the last 16, Spain came up against Ireland and, despite going ahead thanks to an early goal from Fernando Morientes, the rest of the match was played on a knife edge. Casillas kept Spain ahead as he saved a penalty from Ian Harte in the second half, but he could do nothing to prevent Robbie Keane's late leveller from the spot and after a goalless period of extra time, the match would be decided by a shootout.
And Casillas was the hero again, saving from David Connolly and Kevin Kilbane to send Spain into the last eight.
Six years on, Casillas helped rewrite history for Spain at Euro 2008, as he captained the side to their first tournament success since the European Championship in 1964. And the Real Madrid keeper played a pivotal part, saving from Antonio Di Natale and Daniel De Rossi in the shootout following 120 minutes of tense football with no goals.
Ireland was seen as the biggest test for a Spain side that had cruised through the group stages, with La Roja never having overcome the Azzurri in a major tournament. They did in 2008, thanks to Casillas, and the rest is history.
2010 WORLD CUP: SPAIN 1-0 PARAGUAY: TAKING REINA'S ADVICE
On their way to the title in South Africa, Spain met Paraguay in the quarter-finals. The side coached by Gerardo Martino closed the space in midfield and made life uncomfortable for Vicente del Bosque's men throughout. Gerard Pique gave away a penalty in the second half and Spain's passage to the semi-finals suddenly appeared in doubt.
Pepe Reina knew exactly where Oscar Cardozo would place the ball, having been beaten by the Paraguayan against Benfica and having studied numerous rivals before the tournament, passed the tip to Casillas. Iker did the rest and did not even allow a rebound.
2010 WORLD CUP: SPAIN 1-0 NETHERLANDS: CASILLAS TWO; ROBBEN NIL
In the 61st minute of the World Cup final, there was a sharp intake of breath for the whole of Spain. Arjen Robben waltzed through the Spanish back line all alone, only to be thwarted by Casillas on the penalty spot as the Madrid keeper saved with his feet after standing tall and outwitting the Dutchman.
And right at the end of the 90 minutes, the two found themselves one on one once more. The result was the same: Robben was denied by Casillas and the game went to extra time. Then Andres Iniesta stepped up, scored the winner and Spain were champions.
But none of it would have happened without Casillas.

Anyone could be a number 9 from what Del Bosque is saying. Pique could be a targetman 9...
