Hodgson usually goes with a 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1. Judging by his comments in the press conference, we're going with a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 while Rooney is suspended, and possibly returning to a 4-4-2 when he comes back.

I don't believe the formation to have much to do with Carrick being left out. I think Hodgson has merely gone with the safe options with little room for experimentation.

Let's be honest if Roy had called up the actual best English players he would have been crucified because they play for Norwich, Swansea, Wigan (:lucas : ) etc.

He went with a safe squad and imo I think it can do some damage.

Carrick should have been there over Barry. That would have been the safest. How can Barry be considered safe over Carrick?
