Remembering: THis guy looks silly now, doesn't it? Empty Remembering: THis guy looks silly now, doesn't it?

Post by free_cat Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:55 pm

Matt Lawton, who wrote this stupid headline:

The best players of the world (and Xavi): Ronaldo crowned king of football.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1113507/The-best-players-world-Xavi--Ronaldo-crowned-king-football.html

To be honest, it was already silly in 2009 to write that headline (implying that Xavi wasn't one of the best players in the world back then) but now looks ridiculous.

Matt Lawton = Pwned.

Ignorant forum is ignorant. Xavi's performance in the Euro should have been enough, but no, that is not enough, right?

Article was written covering the Ballon D'or for the 2008 calendar year...What had Xavi done til that point? He won Euro 2008, which was basically his coming out party, and what? One league title? "One of the best players in the world" ?? Come on now

kiranr wrote:Ignorant forum is ignorant. Xavi's performance in the Euro should have been enough, but no, that is not enough, right?

What had Xavi done before that? Since when has one successful tournament been enough to crown a player among the best in the world?

Did Materazzi or Fabio Grosso become one of the top players in the world after WC 2006? No? Then why should we revise history and say Xavi was considered among the best in the world in a time when he clearly wasn't?

Xavi wasn't widely considered among the best of the world until after the 2009 season was over, Barca won the treble, and he demolished man utd in front of everyone...to suggest that he was is to revise history, end of

Agreed, Xavi was not widely considered the best. But that does not mean he was not one of the best at the time. He was the best player of the Euros for Spain (awarded that too right?). He had been playing the same way that he does now for years before the Euro. Only difference was he was never an integral part of the system.

After being instrumental in Spain's success, there should not have been much doubt about his ability. That is the point i am trying to make.

You tell me, wasn't Sneijder considered a top 5 or 10 player after Inter's treble season?

Suspect Sneijder was never widely considered a top 5/10 player in the world

He was one of the five best players in the world during the 2009-10 season (at least, in my opinion) but one incredible season isn't enough to make someone among the best in the world...Just like, in Xavis case, one incredible tournament wasnt enough - he had to solidify the theory through his performances over the time that followed...which he did
