We start off this month with a pretty much inconsequential tie against Olympiacos away in Greece. We have already qualified for the knockout stages of the CL and end on top of the group, immaterial of the result in Greece this mid-week. I am pretty sure this is the first game this season which we go into without pressure on our backs. And it might as well be the only such game, given our position in the league and the demand to win week-in and week-out to achieve CL qualification for next season.
The group table currently reads:
Team | Games | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | P |
Arsenal | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 6 | 3 | 3 | 11 |
Marseille | 5 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 7 |
Olympiakos | 5 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 0 | 6 |
Dortmund | 5 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 9 | -5 | 4 |
The second spot is up for grabs and within the grasp for all three teams, with OM having a definite edge. However, if Dortmund can pull off a good win and we do enough damage to the goal difference of Olympiakos, Dortmund would go through as the second team. No doubt talk of this would have gone through to our board, who have been reported to have been laying the ground work for acquiring the services of Götze. There were also reports that Klopp personally requested Wenger to field a strong side.
However, goodwill towards Dortmund (and my soft spot for a German team) aside, this match will essentially be a dead rubber draw for us. What we can gain from this match?
1. A good showing from our reserves and youth players.
2. Another day off from the busy schedules for our key men.
3. A win, which will ensure that we go through unbeaten.
4. A clean sheet, which is always welcome.
Here is the line-up that I expect for this game :

I will update Olympiakos' line-up once I get some sort of idea about it, or after some team news is out. Even so with our own line-up. I expect Rosicky and Benayoun to be involved in some capacity, as will be some of our first-choice CBs.
It would be nice to get a win under our belt. But I am not too worried about this match's results to be honest. What would be more interesting is Park and Chamakh getting a goal and some confidence under their belts and Chamberlain continuing his good run. A 1-2 win would be a satisfactory result.

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
Great preview friend..
Another chance for Chamakh and Park.. Benayoun captained the league match.. so i think he will start.. so Arshavin can start only by benching Park.. and is Rosicky fit ? Surely will see some of these players moving soon.. too many players out of form even to make the second team..

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
Why would we need to smash Olympiacos for Dortmund to go through?
If they win, and we just beat Olympiacos, they'd have more points than them .

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
Okay, say we beat Olympiakos. Then they'd remain on 6 points, and we'll finish on 14 points. Their GD is currently 0, so it will dip to -2 or -3 (say).
Assuming Dortmund win against OM, they will also be on 7 points with OM. But their GD will need to move some way from -5 to get over OM, who are at +2.
So, we need to smash Olympiakos for our confidence and Dortmund need to smash OM to go through.

Ah okay, just realized where you read that.. By doing "enough damage to Olympiakos' GD", I meant we put a couple past them and win the match.. I see the ambiguity in what I wrote earlier Thanks

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
Great Preview.
But I don't think Park + Chamakh should play at the same time. Doesn't work.
Benayoun on the left for me.
Rosicky should be back too.

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
I reckon we use this game to negotiate with BVB for Gotze. Staying in the competition for the next round will translate into a coupla Millions of additional revenue for them. This can be worked out and used as a bargaining chip for Gotze's fee.
Hopefully they have concluded these negotiations behind the scenes already. Sounds underhanded but I would do it.
U dont give us Gotze @ a lowered fee. bye bye CLeague

They'd have to win by four goals, I can't see us doing that.

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
lool, im confused. i dont know whether we should play a weak side or a strong side. we dont want to get on the bad side of dortmond for obvious reasons. but we also dont want to get injuries to key players.....

I think we'd go with a weak team, because Wenger does that.

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
It's certain to be a weaker squad. We're not obligated to do Dortmund any favours, and their failure to qualify is entirely their fault, not ours.
Seriously, forget Mario Götze.
Anyway, I won't be bothered if we don't win but I'd like for us to keep our unbeaten streak going. Olympiacos are a useful side and in their own backyard are difficult opposition to face.
I remember a couple of years ago when we went there and played the likes of Thomas Cruise, Fran Merida, Aaron Ramsey and Carlos Vela. That team performed really well on the night, and I think the team we'll be going with this time is stronger. We should still be able to win.
I imagine we'll see something like:
With the posibillity of Rosicky and Arshavin also starting somewhere.

Great preview Sri.
It feels nice going in to this game and having to play our youngsters. I really think we can get a positive result and maybe even win the game.
I am going with a 2-1 win.

this game should be a good experience for some of the younger players. very hostile environment and with all the stuff going on in greece, let's see how we respond.

Re: Olympiacos vs Arsenal
I dont think such a deal is practical.. Forget about Dortmund and Gotze.. We cant afford to drop points in the pl and so our starters need rest..
Rest for Kos too.. Djurou and Squillaci at cb.. Play Yennaris at rb.. And Chamberlain and Benayoun should start with Arshavin or Rosicky.. And for a change start Park.. But i dont think it will happen..

you never get days off from training.... they might have easier training than the others but they still have to do it... as they still play during the weekend... you have to always be in shape

Erm yeah.. For clarity : By day off, I meant a day when they are not travelling to/from a country halfway across the continent, OR playing a game in which the result is inconsequential.
Ofcourse they'd've training and gym, we aren't paying the bunch a few tens of thousands of pounds each week to laze around on their arses! [That brings to mind, a video of Santos enjoying fish and chips]
