I use a Macbook for work, it kinda lags, but thats only when i do some crazy programming stuff

Reasons to buy a Mac:
Good programming tools, linux terminal is totally boss, easy workspace oriented interface,
Reasons to buy a PC:
Gaming, better processor, cheaper, more customizable,

stay away from HP like its the plague.... massive overheating problems

alienware - overrated... too expensive, you pay 50% only for the brand name

asus - pretty good these days i bought a K53SM 2 weeks ago and im pretty satisfied with its performance. it also has a pretty well placed venting system.

honorable mentions: lenovo, acer, toshiba - you might want to take a look at one of these brands as well.

get the asus, the hp envy doesn't have that many cases of heating problems as its their top of the line product but still you have to be careful

and just stay away from alienware

Since we're not just talking about Macs but also about many other laptops and with Australians going off topic, I've renamed the thread Razz

So I've got some more questions:

1) Have any of you experienced using an SSD? Is it really worth the extra money? What difference does it make for your personally?

2) How large is the difference between a 2GB nVidia GT 630M DDR3 vs a 1GB 650 DDR5? (I doubt the term is right)

3) From your opinion whats the average age of a high end laptop these days? I'm salivating over the ASUS N56 but in truth I won't really be using it THAT much until the start of 2013 since I don't travel much and have a desktop (albiet a 1.6Ghz Dual Core PC that's more than 5 years old Laughing)

1) SSD is a huge improvement, makes your transfer rate alot faster. and if your using it for OS files and programs only. Makes it go alot faster.

I think having a 64gb or 128gb SSD just for OS is great with an 500gb+ HDD

I a thinking of removing my blue-ray drive and adding a SSD instead

2)is the 650 Nivida too?

3) It depends, most laptops these days are supposed to last 2-3 years (in terms of being up to date). High end laptops can last you 4 years i think. But seeing as how fast Technology is improving these days even high end laptops became old in around 2 years to 3 years

if you want a laptop right now that will last get one with 3rd gen Intel i5 or i7 (Ivy Bridge)

Thanks for the response.

http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Multimedia_Entertainment/N56VZ/#specifications

That's the one I'm hoping to buy.

1) I think I'll get an SSD for Windows + Progs and HDD for the rest of my files and games then. You mentioned it being used instead of your BluRay slot; does this mean it'd replace all optical drives? Bear with me, I have really limited knowledge on these

2) Yeah its both nvidia. Check out the link I posted:

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 650M with 2GB DDR3 VRAM

I'm seeing 1GB DDR5 on some recent laptops. I'm not looking for the highest performing gaming laptop but just curious whether the mentioned card on the N56 can be sufficient for the 4 years I'm overseas

Alot of People and Laptops nowadays (Ultra books & Macbook Air) don't have Optical Drive instead the laptops have 1 HDD and 1 SSD

What alot of people i know do is, get the laptop with the Optical Drive and buy a SSD own their own (which is cheaper) and replace the Optical Drive with that SSD

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 650M is a pretty decent graphic card. The New MacBook is carrying that too

same with laptop question.

actually my laptop is totally outdated its 2006 one. i use the latest HP desktop but for uni i want laptop.

in Japan most or everyone is using mac. while i m more comfy with pc.

but i m very keen using mac.

but should i buy mac book air or pro.???

um just want to let u guys know that i wish this buy would be worth it or i want it to last for long atleast to give me a healthy 6-7 years of computer life.

appreciate big time for ur kind suggestion.

the laptop would be used mostly for normal uni works, office, adobe applications, gaming is option but i wouldnt be too much concerned if mac doesnt support most games. most importantly it gives me all around performance, in terms of processor peformance, memory and with good HDD space.

also should i purchase from apple website directy or go to apple store ???

most laptops these days go outdated in 3-4 years. don't think there are many that would last 6-7.... certainly don't think there is a mac that would last that long.

The new retina mac book pro might last 4-5 max but they costs $2000+

btw u can always install windows on macs if u want

You could make the best out of the previous Macbook Pro version with better hardware and much cheaper than the Retina ones

thanks guys for suggestion. actuallly i thought of buying just 1 year outdated macbook pro but then the price aint that massive difference, few hundred bucks then u can get brand new.

btw, will installing windows will slower the overall performance ???

well i made my current laptop last for 6 years now. i have been using since early 2006. its still xp and thats the best operating system windows has ever come up with. simple and easy.

the only downside is that nowadays with adobe photoshop cs5, office latest installed or any HD video you are watching both in HDD or from internet will slow your overall performance significantly down. even with memory upgrade is not enough. also with windows updates the laptop finds it a bit heavy and unbearable to cope performance wise. gone are the days when a minimum system requirements will be enough for office work. now even for normal work, u need super standard system specs...

anyway it has served me pretty well. so hahaha i was expecting something like that from mac. i think it will... my friends says mac is so much better.

so i think its time to wave arrivederci to pc laptop.

anyway suggestion, word of caution advice ... will be most welcome before buying macbook.

i had so many of them so i said enough of it i want my laptop to last longer so yes my current laptop i have been using it since 2006.

but i have new desktop for home use so i have no problems .. but only when i am taking my university work elsewhere....

Anyone know an Ivy Bridge alternative by Samsung for the ASUS N56V?

This link seems pretty good. But I'm looking for a 15" version

honestly for laptops, i can refer $1000 brilliant ones

Toshiba has some excellent Laptops but you have to decide what your top priority is

My laptop is a
750GB HDD, i7 2670 quad-core processor, WiDi, Wifi, 2.0 MP camera, 2GB Nvidia GE540, backlit keyboard and a pretty awesome screen
it works like a boss but it has its design flaws
for one its a beast, its really really big but hollow which basically means that they havent used the space properly. It could have been so much more compact and could have shaved a pound off it too.
but you have to make compromises depending on your need

i think this laptop will last atleast another 15 months, its been 8 months since i bought it

thats pretty crazy spec.

i have been really torn what to choose ... im targetting a new buy with a budget of $1200 max to buy new one.

but since u guys put up some high spec, laptop with a good price. i dont know whether to buy a PC laptop or a macbook pro or macbook air.

the laptop can be all rounder with great spec for office work, high storage gaming etc. but i m also desperately wanting to try out something new with mac lol...

u guys gave me headache now what to choose.

btw i m surprised lot of u seems to change laptop within 2-3 years of time.... the laptop i have been using is since 2006 all for university work, photoshopping office, etc..

the desktop i have however is just 1 year old bought solely for multimedia purposes.
