The thing is, when people say 3 man defence, it normally is a 5 man defence. With three CBs and two attacking fullbacks. Just look at the examples in this thread. Only Barca and Chile actually used 3 defenders.

Overall, I dont think 3 at the back is possible in England. Mostly because its such a wing based league with so many who favour direct play and crossing. The transitions are too fast from defence to attack and you would ask far too much of those wingback players.

Yea true, It will be a disaster with the heavy pressing from the wings and too much space on the flanks

Crafted it a while ago, it was difficult to get Vidal and Millar to do what they supposed to do.

Yeh I think Napoli are the most obvious ones and probably the most effective ones using it today. If you don't count Barca obviously.

Yep, Napoli and Bayern both done it. As did other teams.

But I didnt put Napoli because everyone knows it already (same with Udinese I also assumed) and I couldnt find one for Bayern.

@ RG I don't like Wilshire there , he 's too dynamic and has alot more to offer than just being a 10.

Attacking wise it has potential. but I think it leaves gap in the defence cause i thought it was suspectable on long balls. Will try and fix that somehow.

The 3 at the back, do you have them as centerbacks or 1 centerback and 2 fullbacks?

I go with the latter, covers space better.

its Sagna Koscielny and Vermaelen atm. Since Vermaelen is a LB as well it works kinda well.

I dont know, But wouldn't a 3 at the back get raped when the opposition has fast and pacy wingers. Tbh i dont even see it surviving a counter attack.

You know, I actually think there are quality full-backs around, we just don't notice them so easily because we have gotten used to expecting a "quality" full-back to be someone like Alves or Marcelo or Carlos or who ever attacking full-back.

Can't a defensively solid full-back be considered a quality one?

RB's like Arbeloa and Sanga are solid, but don't really offer much going forward and are considered good fullbacks.

A fullback who does his job going forwad is fine.

A fullback who literally does nothing and takes away from attack going forwad is a no no.

Sagna while he can't cross, is physical enough to open up space down the flank and can pass very well. He's also fast.

He also has a decent shot whenever he tries...

There's hardly many of them about either....... Enrique is one of the very few quality ones.

I doubt it. I think fullbacks today just are too important, they offer defensive stability and width.

In worst possible scenario managers just have to convert wingers or DMs to FBs

Best way imo.

Ajax 3 at the back was about the left and right side being what we now know as fullbacks, not center defenders pushed out there.
