Re: Manuel Neuer - The Playmaker Goalkeeper Fan Club
He was of course really good, but he did have some blame in the Drogba header, and he got a bit too arrogant after scoring his own penalty, which probably prevented him from getting one (although, tbh, all the penalties after were pretty unstoppable).
He did take the defeat with grace though, walking down to get his medal like a roman emperor.

Well, as I just saw an analysis of the Drogba goal in detail, it didn't appear so saveable after all as Drogba put quite some power behind the ball. Thomas Helmer mentioned a fitting Oliver Kahn quote: "In super slow-motion every goal appears easy to save."
But taking the 3rd pen in the CL final as GK after several other players chickened out, when being asked to volunteer, took quite some balls.

Agreed, the kid got ice.
He would have been CL's best player if he wasn't robbed by Cech heroics and amazing penelty stopping.

Re: Manuel Neuer - The Playmaker Goalkeeper Fan Club
I don't know why anyone would say anything other than this: Neuer had a flawless match last night, basically. That Drogba header was from like 5 or 6 yards and way too hard, he saved a penalty, scored one himself, and came close to saving two more. His strikers let him down, but everything besides Gomez and Robben was working quite well, I wouldn't panic if I was a fan of Neuer, or Bayern in general.
Lost a final, happens. Still got to a UCL final, that's already impressive. And still looked better than Barca

He flapped at one cross which gave Kalou a chance from memory, but he was still solid.
After he'd made a save to begin with, smashed the crossbar jumping around and pumping himself up so that the goals were shaking and had slotted a penalty, I'd have been terrified to try and beat him and that's exactly what a goalkeeper needs to inspire: fear. He did everything he could, the others just let him down.

He was a pillar when his team needed him to step up in the shootout. Only real critique is that Drogba's header was a chance for him to make a Hollywood save and win Bayern the title.
All big keepers have that one save in a final. (Some have more) Neuer doesn't yet, yet being the operative word.

I wish Bayern would decide to make him Captain instead of Lahm. He'd be a far more imposing skipper! (And those Bayern Ultras can eff off!)

Chelsea had what 2-3 shots on target in 120 minutes of football? Yeah he was awesome ....
Neuer jumped ship from one losing team to another and that does not look like changing any time soon either. Good luck to him but the guy is a douche on and off the field and at the age of 26 without anything real to his name I cannot see how people are calling him one of the best in the world.
All the great keepers you see or heard of have all done something tangible way before the age of 26 and I know a keepers career is a long one but the tired old cliche is well getting tired.
Saving Mata's penalty is worth about as much as a grain of salt he has missed more than half all the pens he has taken in his career, he is just shit at it.
But hey credit where it's due he has talent. Let's hope the talented German team will get him something, because that's the only place I see him getting any silver in the near future.

Don't get me wrong I felt some of his post match comments were really arrogant but he preformed well overall.

Wow, I agree with about nothing Crimson just wrote, especially the old "good player = trophies" analogy is just plain wrong, I don't even see how anyone would reasonable argue anything different.
And Bayern not winning anything soon... We'll see, I don't see them getting worse any time soon.

Well name any top keeper over the last 20 years who hadn't done anything before the age of 26? Hell even Reina at freaking Liverpool and Villarreal got a few minor European trophies at the age of like 21/23 ffs.
Neuer left for a big club, talked alot of shit along the way and acted like a general douche in the process and then gets his ass handed to him by Chelsea who had all of 2-3 shots on target. Couldn't happen to a nicer asshole.
As I said if Bayern can't beat Dortmund atm how the hell they supposed to beat them when they get Reus? lol. Then we could also mention their coach while good at ko tournies I will agree he isn't the one to usually step in and win you a league.
If he wins at Euros which he has a good shot of doing then kudos to him he will finally have something to talk about.
As I said he is very talented but a truly amazing keeper will win you trophies, Buffon in 06 or even this year. Casillas in '10 and 2002 and even last year in the CdR final. Hell even De Gea at Atletico Madrid ffs.
Sigh whatever.

Buffon won the Uefa Cup and a couple of other trophies with Parma lmao
Casillas has always been at Madrid but that does not change the fact he displaced Bodo (a German International with over 50 caps) to the bench within a single season! And became the youngest ever goalkeeper to start a UCL final (and kept a clean sheet too)
Neuer is 26, immensely talented but really what has he got to show for all his talent? Hell even Hart has now something to his name lmao

There are plenty of amazing players without a helluva lot of trophies. Hell, does Ballack have a major title to his name? 1 Bundesliga I think and that's it, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't understand the argument.
Neuer is certainly one of the best keepers I've seen in recent years. And one of the top top keepers right now. That's all that matters. I don't give a crap whether or not he has anything to show for it.
BTW sign me up Neuer is a boss!

Re: Manuel Neuer - The Playmaker Goalkeeper Fan Club
Ballack has ^^
3x Bundesliga
3x DFB Pokal
3x FA Cup
1 PL.
Neuer has time, he will definitely win some.
Only complaint he didn't have any of those game defining saves that some keepers have in finals. He didn't really impose himself on the Dortmund game . You can't really look at any goal and say "the keeper is at fault" but you're still kinda left wondering what he did......didn't produce those special saves.
Against Chelsea didn't have much to do, surprisingly fumbled a cross lol which I didn't expect , but he wasn't bad.Again didn't make any real game defining saves.
I think he needs to do better than that to be one of the greatest if I'm being completely honest, not blaming the losses on him , but just saying you don't really get to be a great by "not being a problem", you have to do more than just put in a shift.

i think schweigen is a better captain.
but agree, lahm being a captain is rubbish
so neuer must win something?
Tbf, he did all he could in WC, league, CL. It's his teamates who let him down. Wtf do you want a keeper to do? save every ball every time during 1 final? It's not impossible, but it sure need some luck, good defending, and possibly the fact that ur opponent aren't playing well. That's exactly what happened for Cech. Now for Neuer, he saved so many penalties for germany, as well as bayern already. It's not his fault that his teamates don't want to take those kicks...or his coach play a tactic that doesn't work against a certain team.
Even in the world cup, Neuer shined like a star, and assisted Klose for 1 goal against England. He also contributed a big chunk of bayern's win to stop Mourinho from going to the final. It's not his fault if his defenders celebrate too soon, and did not mark Drogba tightly enough during the most important corner of the game.
Don't blame that he's not good enough simply because he haven't had the "heroic" saves in the finals. He helped bayern progressed by saving kaka's and ronaldo's penalty. Jesus, 20 corners and not even a "good" challenge on cech, bayern should've won comfortably. Instead, gomez sucked big time, robben missing a crucial penalty, and dead ball specialist Kroos chickened out.

Re: Manuel Neuer - The Playmaker Goalkeeper Fan Club
It is interesting that many people are annoyed of mercenaries, but when there is a player who prefers to stay with his childhood club for much longer than probably good for his career, he gets ridiculed, too. Neuer managed to save Schalke from worse defeats so many times that it isn't funny anymore. That the overall Schalke team was rather crappy in outfield player quality can't be considered Neuer's fault!Crimson wrote:Well name any top keeper over the last 20 years who hadn't done anything before the age of 26? Okay, last season, Neuer deceided to move to a more successful club, but that this club "only" reached 2nd place in all competitions can't be considered Neuer's fault alone either. The Bayern defense actually was the best defense in the BL this season, if you look at the goal/match ratio, and they were the second in the top 5 leagues Europe wide, too. If the Bayern strikers let him down by managing to squander countless chances shows Neuer is a bad GK how?
On Saturday he even stepped up, took one of the penalties and *scored* next to saving one penalty, which was more than certain accomplished outfield players could boast.
Now at Bayern, winning silverware is just a matter of time for Neuer. I just think it is highly unfair to consider him a bad GK just because he decided against going away from Schalke earlier.

Neuer is alright, no Casillas but he'll get there. Seriously, the man is a wonderful keeper who just has way too much people (madam RWO included) hyping him a bit too much.
Also, would just like to point out that Parma side was wonderful. Dino Baggio (missed a very decisive penalty against France in 1998 WC but that's alright)...

Is it hyping to point out the facts? 1147 minutes without goal over all competitions (Bayern record, 4th in all-time), 770 minutes without goal in the BL (3rd in all-time), 17 clean sheets in 32 matches (2nd behind Kahn who reached 19 in one season), only 22 goal conceded in the BL (again second behind Kahn who once reached 21), saved 5 pens in three shootouts, even scored one - and this just in his first season with Bayern.
