Is this true??
I was viewing a controversial statement from a Egyptian lady lawyer about Palestine issue and just heard she saying
"Most Arab countries have no sexual harassment laws"-1.05 in video
is it true? Then how are they dealing with sexual harassment towards women in Arab countries?
Re: Is this true??
If you sexually harass a woman in an Arab country she will most likely tell her Husband/Father/Brother etc and they will tell their friends and will probably hunt you down and beat you to within an inch of your life. While this is enough to deter most it really isn't good enough IMO and there really should be a law in place.
Unfortunately this is true in a purely legal frame work but you also have to understand that most Arab countries have Sharia'a law in place and I am 100% sure that sexual Harassment is a sin in Islam so technically there is a rule that says it's not allowed and should be punished.
So the answer would be yes and no.

Re: Is this true??
Nope, no true arab muslim or christian would ever touch a girl in Egypt. We all have sisters, daughters, aunts, lots of females in the family. We are raised to treat every girl the same way we would like our sisters and daughters to be treated. Obviously there are some pussies who like to be rebels and prey on girls, but when they are caught they receive a beating from every man within 500 meters.

While you and Messi are upstanding Gentlemen some guys are just dicks. You can't ignore their existence. That is why the law exists.
Sure if the Police were informed they would do something about it but it's nice have something official to fall back on.

Yeah I was just pointing out the "no true X" fallacy.
Anyway I'm sure there are many that would kick the pervert's ass but street justice is not a legitimate form of punishment.
Having a clear official rule and punishment on this is something that should exist IMO.

Re: Is this true??
I have seen this done, a guy on a bike while passing by a girl he kissed her. Her brother was following her. He pushed the guy off the bike. Started to beat him, all his neighbors came down and helped beat the guy. After beating the guy up and making him apologize. They hugged the guy and took him out to lunch. In Egypt where the police is run by bribery. This method is the best justice.
But, in the future we need a more civilized system haha.

Re: Is this true??
Most community laws in Arab countries are run by the community, community laws like Marriage, Divorce, harassment, bullying since no one trusts the local governments.
Something needs to be done to regulate the whole thing, but what is in place now is inefficient, long, brutal, stupid, or just plain face-palm worthy. Here are a bunch of stories of different harassment cases that ended with differing results. I studied these cases very carefully from top to bottom so please suspend your initial doubts and believe what I have to say:
Case#1: A Saudi and his Nigerian driver rapes a women and the third (a Saudi) videotapes the whole thing.
Judgment: The issue went public very fast, with the families of the two Saudi's disowning them, and the Saudi government refusing to extradite the Nigerian. In fact, it is entirely feasible that if the Saudi gov extradited him they would have had to deal with large scale riots which are simply not possible in Saudi Arabia. The government had to protect the convicts from the wrath of the public, and the execution order was one of the fastest ever in Saudi Arabia.
Conclusion: all involved in the rape were executed in the first ever nationwide rape case.
Case#2: Two women are repeatedly touched, pulled, and otherwise being verbally abused by three Saudi men with a fourth taping the whole thing.
Judgment: There was no rape or other physical assault other than forcible touching. The nation was having an issue with the increase of harrasments like these with public law unable to overcome them. The surprise was that all involved were sentenced for life.
Conclusion: the guilty party are still in jail after I think 5-6 years and are to be in for life. However, they can get out by either a King's pardon, or if they memorize the Quran (these two are staples in Saudi law).
Case#3: Girl in Iraq being stalked by two men after a the Mahmudiyah killings. Sever sexual remarks were hurled at her by the two guys.
Judgment: with the absence of an organized police force, the two men were background checked to see they are no affiliated with any major faction. I was told that if they were found to be indeed so affiliated, they would have simply relocated the girl. When they found out they were not. Those two got an ambush and the beating of a lifetime.
According to one person, "the whole fury of the war came out on these two who dare disturb our family and lifestyle".
Conclusion: Due to the close surveillance by an Islamic cleric, both men where not severely harmed but were heavily bruised but suffered no broken bones or anything serious. According to another person, "we did not want to kill them, we just wanted them to feel pain waking up in the morning to understand the danger she felt being stalked by them"
Case#4: In Jordan, a man repeatedly made unwanted advances towards some girl in the same isle. The girls was noticeably annoyed.
Judgment: a man from back saw the whole thing, got up and asked the girl the permission to beat up the man. She gave it and he then proceeded to beat up the man. A male flight attendant came up to break up the fight, but when he learned the reason proceeded to assist the man by beating up the culprit.
Conclusion: the police officer was from the same tribe as the culprit, so the flight attendant was fired from his job. I know that if the women was raped in some obscure place, and she had no video evidence or the means to make it public, that the rapist would go away without harm if he was a part of a prominent tribe and the girl was not. The flight attendant was found another job by the girl's father.
Case#5:A minority girl is raped by 8 men and so is the man with her, the men are from the same minority group. The incident is video taped.
Judgment: in in of the most scandalous cases in Saudi, three of the culprits flee outside Saudi, fearing the death penalty. But the verdict the judge gave was laughable at best. 5 years and 500 lashes for each of the of the five rapists. And 20-100 (different reports) to both the raped man and women for unauthorized meeting (when a man meets a women without the presence of a third party related to the women).
Conclusion: the judgment for the rapists was extended for 3 more years making it 8. While the women's lashes were held by international human rights organizations. Clinton went in record condemning Saudi Arabia. Then Clinton remembered who is paying her paycheck, shut her mouth, and Saudi waited for the whole media storm to blow out. The women's family are still waiting for the culprits to come out to kill them themselves .
Case#6: Women is being followed and called a whore by two guys.
Judgment: the women's calls her fiancee and tells him about this, he gets two guys to kidnap those guys and bring them to this Majles. They do so and the commence beating the shit out of these guys. 4 men leave, then this fiancee gets the crazy idea of raping the two to "put their eyes into the ground" he and this other guy knowns as "the fly" do so. Then the fly gets the crazy idea of pouring salt into their wounds and lighting a lighter down there. They then throw those guys into the outside thinking they are too broken to to go to the police. They do go to the police.
Conclusion: In charges of rape/torture/kidnapping 5 are let go because they know important people. Consequently, one of them is the fiancee who gets killed by a family of the two guys. 3 are handed varying 2-15 years in jail. It is funny that the only one who did not take part in the whole torture thing and worded his disapproval and was the first to leave was slapped a 15 year old sentence, while the fly only got 7.
Summary: from cases 2,4,5,6 you see how the government gets swayed by public opinion and tribal and family position which makes issues of these matters very poorly handled by the gov, especially when the community eventually retaliates as in case 6.
But from case 6, you see how the community sometimes go to crazy excessive over light things.
The ideal solution is when you have a respected public face that is not part of the government to handle these issues, which is why the governments need to create a whole new system that deals with such issues that accommodates the customs of the people.

I just listened to the video and it is so fail worthy it is funny.
I would however expect nothing more from Al-Arabiya which is the most anti-people channel and pro-government.

Lord Spencer, Do you have a blog?
My favorite quote
“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”
― Malcolm X
This is basically what zionist are doing to young people.
Sepi, Muslims don't hate jews, They hate being oppressed and stolen from. Zionist like to think and spread the idea that Muslims hate them as a mean of justifying their crimes. When it comes down to basics, muslims and jews have a lot in common.

Zionism isn't all Jewish people though.
But since that conflict between Israel and Palestine has lasted for 6 decades now, the bad feelings has grown way too strong now to ever end IMO.
I don't think I'll see a solution to this issue in my life time. Just can't see how they could possibly come to a solution to make all parties happy.

No I don't have blog, why?
@Sepi; the issue is indeed very deeply ingrained, and you need to actually be there to understand the significance of the whole matter to the parties involved.
I don't think Israel are interested in a solution that favors the Palestinians and they have the upper hand. Unless other countries intervene, the situation will stay as it is.

That I find it hard to believe, Jordan and Egypt are the most two Arab contries I've been to, among Lebanon ofc. In Jordan the law always favours the "female" in those cases, her word is more than enough to get you to jail, wich by the way sucks as well, since it can be mis used, but litterally it is enough for a lady to go to the police station and say "X" man harrased me, that man will be dragged immediately and sent to court the following day, and 99.9% he is going to be found guilty. Unless he proves he is innocent. (This gets us to Sepis' "Innocet untill proven Guilty").
Now in a rape case it is much easier to prove if the gy is innocent or guilty, but harrasment give me a break how can he prove he did'nt do it. By harassment I mean touching, just touching.
Some see it as a strong point for hman rights, some see it as an extream end.
I know this law sucks as well, but I guess Jordanians didnt want to take the slightest risk here, since it is believed no woman will go and claim she was harassed for no reason, since this will damage her social image.

Re: Is this true??
Arab countries need those laws more than anywhere else in the world. Its a known fact that Arabs are the horniest people on earth (as evident by their record breaking viagra consumption rates) and yet they have the fewest sexual outlets (probably why they're horny in the first place). Sexual harassment is very common these days, and no amount of social protection or whatever will ever be enough. I saw a few posts by my fellow Arabs who are basically suggesting that the problem doesnt exist or can be contained using the traditional approach, but that's just wishful thinking.
This issue also reminds me of a funny story that happened to an egyptian friend. He was basically following a girl around trying to flirt with her an all that, and while he was too busy checking her out, apparently the girl called her dad and told him that a guy is following her. so a few minutes later her dad and her two (huge) brothers show up, but before they beat the shit out of him he came up with the excuse that he was following her to know where she lives so he can propose. They welcomed him with open arms and they lived happily ever after :G

VERY wrong. VERY VERY VERY wrong. Close minded extremists hate Jews , we in general hate ISRAELIS, one of my close friends is a Jew, doesn't mean he's any less of a person, what does he have to do with anything going on? I personally dislike Israel and I can say it openly, it is a TERRORIST state. A TERRORIST state.

There are Jews living in Lebanon but I don't think Sepi was serious there.
Anyways, yeah this issue is really poorly treated because of the government corruption and lack of proper law structure. It's waaaay too tribal here, that's how it's been and will be for a long time to come.

In arab countries laws dont reflect societies norms like they do in the west, I wouldnt pay much attention to wether the law exists or not. The unwritten social contract is much more important.

I thought women were not even permitted to drive in some Middle Eastern countries, and that they are not permitted to be on their own unless accompanied by a male of some sort ?
I think women's rights are the least of their concern, evidently.
