It is reported Alessandro Nesta picked up a thigh strain during tonight’s Milan-Barcelona clash.

The veteran defender limped off in the second half of Milan’s 3-2 Champions League defeat at San Siro.

According to sources at the stadium, the initial diagnosis from Rossoneri medical staff is a thigh strain.

This could keep Nesta out of action for at least two weeks, if not considerably more.

It will be interesting to see how Amelia performs now that he has a chance, though El Shaarawy's absence from the bench will be disappointing if this is accurate.

Genoa captain Marco Rossi asked Gennaro Gattuso and Antonio Cassano to make the trip with Milan after their recent health scares.

Cassano is out for six months after suffering from a mini-stroke and undergoing surgery on a congenital heart defect, while Gattuso’s recovery time is unknown due to the paralysis of an optical nerve that affects the vision in one eye.

“I was emotional at seeing how much dignity Gattuso showed in telling the world what had happened to him,” said Rossi.

“Fortunately, it seems as if the problem might be resolving itself. His message was so extraordinarily humble and he gave such courage to those who are suffering.

“It would be wonderful for me and my teammates to salute him in person when Milan come to Genoa on Friday. There would be very special hugs for him and for Cassano.”

Milan’s Serie A trip to Marassi has been brought forward to Friday evening.

A.C. Milan wishes to communicate that Christian Abbiati is suffering from a sprained right shoulder. Medical consultations have not yet ruled out the possibility of surgery. The recovery time is estimated to be between 10 and 15 days.

MILANELLO - Training started at 11.30 for Massimilano Allegri's players. The team is working on the raised pitch behind the gym. Mexes, Aquilani, Van Bommel and Thiago Silva are all training with the group. Rino Gattuso is training with the main group at the Milanello sports centre.
