Iceman wrote:I'm talking about him as a defensive midfielder, which is the topic. If you want to talk about something else, then go make another thread.
Not to mention, he was the best player on the pitch in the first half
This.
And this thread, a disappointing knee-jerk from an otherwise fine poster.
Alex Song = what Arsenal need.

I have already seen him play, but today was kindergarden level. A blind man could have a better positioning sence.BeautifulGame wrote:Sushi Master wrote:If you want to put the blame on someone today, Santos was SHIT. Both of Blackburn goals came from his frakked in the ass positioning.

Wenger's set piece defense went back to it's usual efficiency today.

Re: Alex Song
1st goal was Santos fault.
2nd Goal his fault he didn't expect defender to miss it.
3rd Goal was offside
4th goal he could of done better but still defender should of cleared that cross and Woj missed the cross too leaving the goal open.
Clearly he is the worst defensive midfielder of all time, even though he was fantastic against Dortmund.
Ramsey is also responsible for defending as he is playing the same role as Wilshere played last season so it's his fault as well.
Song has played more than one game is his career so evaluating his performance from one of them and calling him bad makes you pretty stupid.

Was Gibbs on the bench? I would've taken Santos off at half time

I dont think match fitness influences a defender's positional sense. Its not like he looked rusty and even looked very good when going forward.
Also how everyone rate Arteta's performances?

He was, but I understand not subbing him in that early considering it's only left back and Sagna was already carrying a knock.Lex wrote:Was Gibbs on the bench? I would've taken Santos off at half time

Re: Alex Song
Don't understand how anyone could say this thread is knee-jerk...? I've been saying Song is a terrible DEFENSIVE midfielder since the old forums were still up.
I think he has enough ability to play in a box to box role but a DM he is not. His awful positioning and lack of discipline has been costing Arsenal goals on the counter for years now.
Even Wilshere is more disciplined than he is.

Re: Alex Song
Why would u expect WC defending from santos who was making his debut ffs ? And we had mertesacker who has played like 2 matches so far ? Defence isnt made in 2 weeks. Takes time for everyone to gel together

Re: Alex Song
He's great as a DM, actually. It's when he goes box to box that he becomes shitty, since he leaves acres of space behind him. None of the goals were his fault apart from the fluke, and the first goal was his assist.
You clearly don't watch many Arsenal matches.

Re: Alex Song
Guess in hindsight, you're right. Chamakh coming on meant we scored a consolation goal and if only somebody got on the end of one of Walcott's awesome crosses today
Still, i honestly believe if Gibbs were on, two of the four they scored wouldn't have gone in today so it's catch 22 a.k.a pick your poison.

Yeah, Ramsey was awful today. Kept going down the right flank for some bizarre reason leaving Arsenal's right side exposed time after time and none of his Hollywood balls actually came off. Would love to see the statistics for his passing accuracy today.
He didn't look like he was fit though to be fair to him.

I think Song has been doing just fine as a DM for a team like Arsenal, who are looking to play possession football. You don't need an out-and-out DM then, but someone who is versatile, imo. There are pure DMs I'd take over Song any day of the week, but as for Arsenal, I think he's a very good fit for them and doesn't really deserve a thread like this one.

Re: Alex Song
There was so much fail, Gibbs should of played Santos was not match fit, Coquelin should of come on instead of Djourou as he actually can play RB and is more equipped to deal with Hoilett's pace and trickery. Walcott should of started pretty obvious as Blackburn's wing backs are slow. This thread should of been on Ramsey his passing was off and he didn't help Song at all breaking up attacks.

Re: Alex Song
Arsenal were abysmal in second half today, but Song had a good game. He couldn't have done anything about the own goal, unlike Koscielny whose reaction was just retarded.
They also stuggled offensively in the second half. In the first half Arteta was able to dictate proceedings, he started nearly every Arsenal attack. Blackburn adjusted their tactics accordingly, and Arteta was completely invisible in the second half. This turned out to be enough.
Also might want to consider the psychological effect of an offside goal and two freak own goals on a team with an already shaken morale, and like a cherry on top, Sagna's injury.
Keane immediately brought on Olson, which helped his team in two ways: one, Olson is much faster than Givet whose position he took over, and thus more capable to defend vs Gervinho (and later Walcott), and two: he created a stronger offensive potential on that side, where Olson, Yakubu and Hoilett focused Blackburn's attacks from then on, in order to take advantage of Djourou's playing out-of-position. Djourou was raped by Olson for the fourth goal, even though this remarkably happened on the other side of the pitch.
