Del Piero donates $300,000 to Japan
20,951 T-shirts sold and a $303,880 cheque to the order of Red Cross Japan. Alessandro Del Piero’s “Ale10 Friends for Japan” initiative, meant to aid the Japanese population hit by last March’s earthquake by helping rebuild the affected areas of the country, was a great success. The Juventus captain has always been very closely tied to the Land of the Rising Sun, home of many of his fans and the country where he won the 1996 Intercontinental Cup by scoring the match-winning goal. The initiative began last April, a few days after the earthquake, and Tuesday was the day when the collected funds were formally donated to the Japanese general consul in Italy, Shigemi Jomori.
“It is an important day” said Del piero, “and it closes an exciting 6period of 6 months. I must thank all those who bought the T-shirt with the project logo, the 20 teams of Serie A and the 22 teams of Serie B as well as their captains, the AIA (Italian Referee Association), the AIC (Italian Football Players Association), as well as all the sports figures, the agencies, and the people who all around the world contributed to this success. This is the confirmation that on themes like these, there is no rivalry or tension, but fantastic cohesion. I am very proud of this result, we scored a beautiful goal. It will help those that need it.”
“I am personally moved” said consul Jomori, “and I thank, in the name of the people of Japan, Del Piero and all those who participated in this project, turning it from a personal initiative to a big movement involving so many people.” The Japan earthquake caused over 20,000 casualties and leveled entire communities. All the funds will be handled directly by Red Cross Japan, who will direct them where they are most needed by those affected by the disaster.

I post in the general section because I believe most people should see this and not Just the juve section. We already know how great Alex is and this only makes my respect for him grow. A true legend.

Don't get me wrong, but Del Piero could have made more of a difference by donating that to an undeveloped country rather than a developed one like Japan.

Alessandro Del Piero’s nothing to do with what he donated, he will always be one of my Fav players. The only reason I like Juventus is cus of him.

Sure, but there are people that need that money more than others. Japan has the situation under control.

I agree, but when you donate to Japan you know the money is going to be used well.
Most of the countries in need in Africa are under corrupt governments and donations are not being used efficiently at all. 300,000 $ would be of little value when they skimp it down by all the corruption.
Look at Haiti for example, about 6 billion dollars are nowhere to be seen because of all the inefficient BS that is happening there.
IMO, larger emphasis should be on not only helping the needy countries, but also helping them help themselves.

Spencer brings up a great point. Realistically of the $300,000 dollars to, say, Africa. Only such a small percentage of that money would go into helping them. The governments need sorted out before you donate everything to their country.
P.S Negatively repping the original post is just disrespectful. fools.

Re: Del Piero donates $300,000 to Japan
I'm not disagreeing. But not all charity programs in Africa are the same. Some charities specialize in a) bringing in professionals that are only useful during the temporary face of transition between a dictatorship and a democracy b) setting money aside for future use rather than spending it all at once, when new democracies are often awful at resource management c) lobby for change in trade barriers (which, if took place, would have a far greater effect than anything else) and so on. The high risk high reward medium is the way to go.Lord Spencer wrote:BarrileteCosmico wrote:The xcx wrote:Thats not the point, you cant possibly make a bad donation. Piero is humble and respectful

Class. Makes him better than 95% of all those greedy footballers nowadays.
Even if it's to Japan, donation is never a bad thing.

Are you serous? He donated to victims of the Japan earthquake who now have nothing. Del piero has respect for Asia he said. How can u say he shouslve donated to Africa instead. Yes they need money as well but he does alot more charity work, this was just one initiative. Show some respect. I'd like to see you ever raise that sort of money, If u do, well then u can go donate to Africa instead

Re: Del Piero donates $300,000 to Japan
I'm disappointed in ADP. Instead of donating actual money to an actual cause silently, he should've told the execs at Juve to put "Japan Foundation" on all the players' shirts (ala Qatar Foundation style), so ADP and Juve end up getting better publicity out of it.
That's the Barca way to do things.

Re: Del Piero donates $300,000 to Japan
For the people saying why didn't he donate to Africa. Read this . I found it from a goal.com comment
I come from a family of Roma supporters, so needless to say I've been given a lot of grief over the years for supporting Juve, but I can honestly say that I've never been more proud to support Juve. We went to Serie B to ensure that the rest of the Serie A teams could still play in Europe, we play with almost an entirely Italian squad - how many big teams in Europe can say that-, and we have champions like Del Piero and Buffon. However, to address all you people that keep on saying that more money must be given to Africa and Africans, trust me, as I have lived in Africa my entire life, you have no idea what you're talking about. Billions of dollars and millions of tons of food are donated every year, and the fat cats steel it all. Why help a people that don't ever help anyone else? You people see the 'terrible' images of starving women and their babies, and you say we must do something about it. But did you ever stop and ask why those people are still having babies when they know that

Re: Del Piero donates $300,000 to Japan
I'm not sure people are understanding ADP's cause and motive as after the Japan disaster, ADP immediately inaugurated his own personal campaign to help Japan as much as he can and has done a superb job so far.
Here is his campaign T-shirt:
ADP regularly contributes to unfortunate countries but this is his main campaign as his the Japan disaster did truly effect him.

FFS, people obviously didn't get that my comment was sarcastic and was supposed to be a lighthearted dig at Barca and not ADP. I thought "/troll" was clear enough, but obviously, it wasn't.
