Re: Real Madrid vs Bayern vs Manchester United 1998-2002 Rivalry
I remember running through torrential rain fall just to see the 2nd leg of Real Bayern game. Got Asthma that last a month, missed all my end of term exams and received a not so nice grade in my report card.
It was worth it...

serie a was no.1 in co-effs list that time..parma and inter were performing in the uefa cup..and juve were atleast qualifying for the semis each yr..and valencia were superb bunch at that time..i think they deserved to win atleast 1 cl..

Im pretty sure united didnt knock us out since '68.
You sir is wrong, I'm pretty sure Bayern was the only stopping you guys from winning it.
1999 and 2001
Yes they stopped madrid from winning it through playing anti-football! where am I wrong?

Wasn't anti football Yuri my friend but it wasn't attacking football. The Bayern back then used to stifle the opponent's midfield with Jen Jeremies being the nastiness he was (great player though) and strive on the brilliance of Effenberg and Scholl and the clinical efficiency of Giovanni Elber. Also, they were coached by Omar Hitzfeld who sides, by all intense and purposes, play a very discipline and defensive game before the attacking mentality kicks in.
But it definitely wasn't anti football...

Cmon Buitre, we both know that it was anti-football when they played real madrid (not so much in other games). Mourinho is def the hitzfield of our time, the only reason hitzfield was not as famous is because he didnt do the press conferences and he was somewhat shy. Its by no surprise at all that Hitzfield beat spain with switzerland when just two months before that mourinho beat barca with inter. I found it hilarious that hitzfield criticized mourinho this year, hypocrisy at its best.
Close space, stifle the opposition, go from defense to offense in lightning speed (rough up the opponent on the way).

You consider that anti - football? Sounds like you just described catenaccio in a nutshell unless you consider that anti - football. Yes, I agree, Hitzfeld was basically a hypocrite for his criticism of Mourinho when he himself is a student of that school of football tactics. But I still don't agree with the anti - football remark. I remember Bayern played Madrid off the park when they met up in the group stages in the Bernabeu. There wasn't any "anti - football" from Bayern during that match.
Can't believed I just defended Bayern. God what have I become....I take everything back Yuri. I laughed my ass off when Sali-what's his name got sent off, suits him right when he had the gal to criticise Roberto before the 2nd leg. Also, Jens Jeremies is the dirtiest, nastiest, king of nasty bastardry footballer who would make David Navarro blush with envy...

I'd take Raul & Morientes in their prime over Higgy and Benz (as bad as that sounds).....I'd take Roberto Carlos and Salgado over Marcelo and Ramos.....I'd take Hierro over Pepe....I'd take take Redondo over Alonso.....All of that in a heartbeat....What incredible times those were.
And I'd like to give a shout out to Celta Vigo, they were a force back then as well.

This is ridiculous. Just becos Barca are so good and dominate, some ppl are envious and dont like it, now they say they prefer no one dominates, or that Barca dont like being physical. Barca in fact are very tough and physical side to their game is very important, its just bloody Real and in cases some other teams out right play dirty too much when they play us trying to put us off our game. In most cases we handle it if they dont step over the fair play.
its just the times and cycles of football, and Barca are a step ahead of everyone atm, but it will end sometime and it will be more competitive sooner or later.

Real had a good team back then though, although it was strange since Barca and others would win the league at times while Real win the CL without having won the league
Juve were good as well, but probably lacked a bit with Di Livio I remember and another 1-2 weakness in their team, otherwise they would probably have beaten Real instead of losing 2 CL finals to them I think?

Barca were more Dutch than Catalan in those years

Best game I have EVER seen was Bayern vs Man U THE final, I still wonder how that game didn't turn me into a Bayern fan, it surely left a soft spot for Byern though.

REal winning the CL in 98 was a joke, it was the equivalent of Porto winning it. I remmeber no one thought they had a chnce. I thought Juve would steam roller them but they made a bad habit of failing in finals, mich like us

Well, it's on now....
Both teams at their best, Only Manchester United dropped out early.
Madrid is the team We love to hate at the same time hate to love, sort of like sibling Rivalry.
I will support Madrid if they get to final, obvious before any other team.

Casillas almost single handedly won that tie in Glasgow in 2002, he made 3 or 4 crucial saves in the dying minutes
but what made Madridistas think they would win the UCL that year was that win vs Munich, it was a magical night, Guti was instrumental and scored a really good goal
but the goal that gave Madrid so much confidence was Geremi's goal

Those where the days of "real beautiful football", well you can say we still have "beautiful football" but that depends on if you consider play-acting and Ref assistance as beautiful , most people will tell you there is beauty in acting.
Point being there is still beautiful football but it's not just Real Beautiful football....lol
Noticed how I didn't mention any team.

Let's hope we can emulate some of that magic in the semifinal vs. Bayern.
I'm really excited for this game. I think it's 50-50. Like Idro said, if we lose, I hope Bayern wins it.

Wasn't Juventus also a strong contender during that time frame?
3 finals 1996-1999?
