you raise a valid point, but i disagree. true you watch how you leverage a 30 year old's contract, but you also look at what you could gain and lose from having him. trust me if messi really made that amount of money that they published, barcelona made more from having him. this is a club that got 222 million for neymar and blew it even before they could grab a cup of coffee.

even if they sold messi last year, their directors would squander that money on yatches and personal projects. i have a feeling the huge transfer fees are used to masquerade other failed projects that they're spending money on which the public knows little about.....anyway we have our own problems. the forum has been more interesting than our games this season

Either way, it isn't a secret that Messi was making TONS. He brings in a lot of money to Barca when it comes to competition awards and branding. Probably not the +500M contract he's on, but one of the reasons he's even paid that much is because that's how much sheikhs were willing to pay for him and more. Messi himself said he received bigger contract offers from other clubs.

The Barca board should have put a wage structure in place to avoid such high salaries. However, if you want to keep your GOAT while Man City were willing to offer him similar amounts or higher, you will have to compensate him accordingly. Barca thought Messi was worth the cost, hence the agreement of that contract. Respect to Jorge for getting da bag.

What I don't understand is that if they were in such a dire financial position, why didn't they just let him go in the summer? it would've saved them 150M and then they would've gotten +100M from the transfer fee. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

@casciavit. ego. with all the f ups bart and his friend rossell have made, he doesnt want to be known as the president who let messi leave the club. its an interim board in place now, so not as damning. falling on his own sword and leaving the interim guys to figure it out was easier. they'd still have blown the money....a player cannot earn more than a club, they're raking in way more than that if that's what he earns.
