this game - barca was happy to let Napoli have all the ball and still be so dangerous in counter attack everytime they push forward - so ruthless in finishing also something napoli lacked. they did ok in first few mins then fell off after first goal - and lacked imagination and final product like barca did.

The RM section said the same thing about CR7 at one point in time, and he showcased it for almost a full match during his one man show in the second leg against Wolfsburg. They both might've been great at it, if they consistently had the motivation to do so, but it matters little since they don't, in my opinion.

Yeah, Messi being an excellent presser isn't a new take. It's been known for the better part of a decade, it's just that he does it so rarely that when he does do it you are surprised by how effective he is at doing it.

I wonder what makes them so good at it. When I look at it from a physical standpoint, I can say that Messi's quick burst of acceleration and the way he pounces at them aggressively with his low centre of gravity helps him out. On the other hand, Ronaldo has longer legs and the strength to catch defenders by surprise.

But when I look at it from another perspective, I believe that maybe it's because defenders don't actually expect them to challenge for the ball so they end up getting surprised when they do. Then again there's the old adage that elite players are elite at anything if they put their mind to it. It can be a mix of reasons.

As for their lack of defending, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Yes, they're lazy and the reason they don't defend is to save themselves for the decisive attacking actions. Paradoxically though, having those two play ahead of the ball when defending aids their own team as well. Opposing teams become scared of playing their fullback higher because they don't want to be caught on the counterattack by those two. I believe Fergie told Ronaldo to stop defending around 2007 or so because he wanted him high up the pitch in case of a counterattack.

Teams responded by not playing their fullback on Ronaldo's side as high and that helped United as opposing teams had one less player attacking them. Honestly, if there's an effective attacking framework to get the best out of their talents their teams can get away with them not defending. The problem with Barca is that they haven't done that in the past few years while Madrid did that superbly from 2016-2018.
