As long as your scouts are solidt they're really important. Also. I highly doubt the 2023 and 2025 picks are gonna be late round. They're gonna be top 10 picks.

You can get cheap role players from free agency. Low-cost rookie contracts are great when that player performs better than what you'd get from free agency for the same salary. Tatum, for example. But late 1st's, in their first couple of years anyway, rarely give you that advantage over a cheap free agency player.

Yes, for Houston to let those later picks go unprotected would be stupid. Even a late first can land you a Capela (25th pick), but if you not only trade away a couple of late firsts but also what could turn out to be lottery picks, that is throwing away too many draft chances.

If you can find me a Kyle Kuzma, Larry Nance or Josh Hart for 1m in FA then please get a front office job somewhere.

You get them at 1m every year for four years. That’s impossible to get anywhere else. And it’s such a low risk high reward because it’s basically the vets minimum anyways.

I've tried explaining this before but that's very rare, more often than not late first round picks are more likely to barely play or out of the league than legit rotation players.

Because the Lakers did well doesn't really negate that reality.

I think there’s a pretty high chance you’ll get something useful. Just look at the 2015 draft as an example. There’s like 3-4 players that were missed on outside of the lottery. Any role player for that amount is good.

Draft picks, and draft picks in general are very much needed for a team to be competitive for a title. You don’t win a title paying role players $10m+. It just doesn’t happen. You have to find them on the cheap.
