Africa watch
Egypt getting embarrassed by Russia. Russia are shite. It's been a few games now. How come are African teams so lacklustre? You'd think the conditions for football would be somewhat similar in South America and Africa. Yet it looks like Africa is on a serious downward curve here.

Senegal were quite good.
Egypt only have Salah so I don't know why people would expect them to do great. Maybe Russia is not actually that bad

Asia 6 points out of a possible 15
Africa 3 points out of a possible 18(assuming Egypt lose this)
Stats dont lie

Re: Africa watch
Like I said African football is at a new low. Lots of controversy across the countries in recent years for minute or major reasons. Lack of taking football seriously over here, not enough support by the government and communities to enhance the quality of the players grassroots and moving up.

Lets wait for the group stages to finish though, we cant judge by watching 1 round, lets not forget carlos sanchez gifted japan the win and iran won via 90th OG despite having 0 shots in the second half at least africa has some great players and talent and i really liked senegal, only good player from asia i can think of is son

Senegal were good by accident. A deflected goal and then the luckiest break-through you'll ever see.
You look at the squads of these African teams, the clubs their key players play for, and you'd expect something more... Yet they keep falling short. It's looking like a low-point for them right now.

Re: Africa watch
A low point?
When exactly were African nations known to be powerhouses in the World Cup?
2014:
Cameroon 0 points
Ivory Coast 3 points (3rd in group)
Nigeria 4 points (2nd in group)
Ghana 1 point
Algeria 4 points (2nd in group)
Are we that far off?
Seems like these nations are being overrated heavily because they have a couple easily recognizable players

Re: Africa watch
Im not sure its a low point, They always have just one team usually qualifying for the round of 16. Senegal seems to be that one.

Relative to their own standards. No one said they were ever powerhouses.
Like I said it's the attitude around football more than anything else across the continent at this point.

Oh my god, one would think that someone who lives in the continent knows a little bit more with what's going on.

What do you mean ? They want to venture into other sports now ?
I always thought Africa was football mad

That was quite decent. Two teams advanced. Right now it's in the balance whether one (Senegal) will advance from an easy group.

Re: Africa watch
Fair point. I guess we’ll see.
Can’t say I expected Nigeria to do much against Croatia. Morocco surely should’ve at least drew with Iran. Egypt almost drew Uruguay too but that’s just how it goes.
Senegal is the best of the lot to me, not just for the result but more of a complete team

Senegal were really good imo, they were compact and well organized, their midfield and defence Koulibaly-Sane bossed it, they are a physical side full of tanks, Poland were clueless against them, and Senegal has some pace up front though they were lacking a final ball today I think they will only improve offensively. And you can always hope for a moment of brilliance from Mane up front. Almost all Senegal players are from PL, Serie A and Bundesliga, they are my favourites from all african&asian teams

Re: Africa watch
Back in 98/02 African teams were looking good. There were always legit teams that could make good runs into the knockouts. Now it really looks like the lowest point since then. We have to wait and see how it evolves but it looks like the lowest point tally since then.

Re: Africa watch
Since the 80s Africa always had exactly 1 team qualifying from the group stages, only in 2014 2 teams qualified. This year its probably gonna be only Senegal so Africa is where it has always been - 1 team going through

No, I thought they actually played well. Not because of the 2 lucky goals.

If anything else, this WC has told us is everyone is inferior to Gareth Southgate's red and white army imo.
