WC best/worst player - power ranking
[KNOCKOUT STAGE]
BEST PLAYERS: Golden Ball
No 1: Mbappe - What a a game he had, if there was ever a way to put himself on the map, he did it. Skewered through Argentina like hot knife through butter. Argentina was leaving a lot of space behind and he destroyed them. Im curious to see what he can do vs Uruguay.
No 2: Cavani - Great finisher, that second goal was just ridiculous of technique. Sent CR packing like a boss. What did he have? 2 chances 2 goals? a shame he is injured for the next game.
No 3 : Schmeichel - he is my first keeper on the list, even though his team went out. He had some great saves, namely the penalty in game vs Modric and then the shoot outs. Probably peaking in his career and it's a nice moment to show it.
No 4: Subasic - Even if he won the PKs i put him below Schmeichel for his in game error. Still ended up being decisive overall and got his team to the next round.
No 5: Hazard: Casper is finally starting to show up on big moments, he will never be a good scorer but he is at least showing up and delivery key assists in big games.
No 6: Neymar - I know he dives too much, but i still think he is getting better and better this tournament. He gets tripled teams and abused but he still delivers
No 7: Pogba - Pogbinho is becoming a real footballer with no fancy haircut and less useless tricks. Handled himself like a real man in midfield vs mascherano and co
No. 8: Kagawa - I really hesitated here between him and Inui but ultimately i felt like he had a greater impact on the game, running circles around Belgium, great niche player.
No 9: Forsberg - Finally came through for his team, even on a deflected shot, he put them through.
No 10: Godin: He has been great all tournament but being in an easy group with 0 attacking threat i wanted to how it would carry vs better sides. he handled his business and helped shut off CR for the win.
WORST: Plastic Ball
No 1: Pique: NUMPTY UNO. what a walking disaster, i would argue Nacho is a better player than this guy nowadays. was horrible for Spain in every game.
No 2: Pepe - NUMPTY DOIS. I mean, this former la liga lads are having a killing here. Pepe was once a great stomper but his best days are behind. chose the wrong game to screw up.
No 3: Carlos Sanchez - He started the world cup with a red card and ends it by handicapping his team vs England. hope his family is safe back home.
No 4: Rojo: Hero to minus zero, got absolutely rekt by Mbappe. it's not easy to cover space vs a speed demon but still, got to do better.
No 5 - Enzo: I can copy and paste all that i said about him in the group stage, hardly ever seen such a bad player.
No 6: De Gea - Tops the list of most useless player in the world cup, the supposedly best GK in the world is supposed to be a tiny bit more i think. disappointing.
No 7 - XHAKA: Granit CaCa i can't believe wenger spent 40 mil on this banteristic player. Emery needs to sign Krychowiak asap
No 8 - Armani: Should really have done better on that 1v1 vs Barca to give his team a lifeline but he lost his challenge and a seemingly winnable battle. fate is cruel, he sent Mbappe on his way to greatness and him, maybe wnt play for argentina again.
No 9: Dzemaili - In such a close game it's a shame he couldnt step up to the moment, he wasn;t even having such a bad world cup. oh well
No 10 Guedes: He escaped the list all world cup thanks to the germans but who did he shot his stock down lol. I dont know where is the guy i watched in valencia for the first 6 months of the year but this aint him

- GROUP STAGE :
- [GROUP STAGE]
BEST PLAYERS: Golden Ball
No 1: Cristiano - Best player in the group stage. Kommander had the best performance in world cup so far, vs Spain. and he is joint 2nd top scorer in the tournament. his 3rd game was poor by many standards but he needs to pick up the pace to move forward now.
No 2: Modric - Best midfielder in the world cup, on paper, and on the pitch. Driving Croatia forward and as always a very dangerous team because no one wants to deal with this guy.
No 3 : Coutinho - the real baller leading brazil right now. he doesnt have to deal with the pressure placed on Neymar's shoulders nor the triple marking, and he is fully leveraging his freedom on the pitch to make a difference for his team.
No 4: Isco - Is Spain has looked like the better team in the group stage to me, Isco has been their best player. Performing from game 1 to 3 with the same high level consistency, and getting himself a goal on the way.
No 5: Lukaku: to win you must outscore your opponents and Lukaku has done it as good as any striker in the world cup so far. 2 games 4 goals, i rate him higher here than Kane because i think he worked a lot more for his goals and showed some quality finishing in the 1v1 chances he had.
No 6: Quintero - i wanted to put in relief how good he had been so far this world cup. Mainly without James, he took over for his team and lifted them in each game to go though the group stage on the last game.
No 7: Lozano - If Mexico have been a surprise so far this tourney, they owe a lot of their success to how good Lozano has been. vs Germany with a key goal and vs Korea a quality assist to help seal the deal.
No. 8: Shaqqiri - Switzerland really impressed me this tourney. and as always Shaqqiri saved it all for his NT with clutch goals and performances in a very tough group to go through.
No 9: Prince Harry Kane - Top scorer of the world cup, they made easy work of their group and it's also thanks to his goals. he was ruthlessly efficient when given the chance and has a chance to score a lot more goals this tourney.
No 10: Granqvist: Now this spot is hard earned as there were many candidates. Ultimately, i looked at the strength of his group, his performance vs Germany, the key goal vs Korea and the PK vs Mexico. I think he meant a bit more than other players for their teams when it came to qualifying to the next phase.
Honorable mentions: Hazard, Yerri Mina, Nerman, Choo Hyun-Wo
WORST: Plastic Ball
No 1: Caballero: There have been a lot of bad keepers in the world cup, but no one has bad as Caballero, ultimately dropped in the game.
No 2: Boateng - Probably the worst CB, the most disappointing for sure. watched the last game from the stands thinking about life in Manchester.
No 3: Kawashima: While he made the save of the tournament in his last game, he was just horrible in he previous two games. too little to late, japan OUT
No 4 - Lewandowski: whelp, letting Yerri Mina snatch your lunchbox is just unacceptable. i am surprised he did not blamed the losses on his teammates. He did nothing yet again in the last game even though they got the win vs Japan.
No 5: Ozil - Long gone are the days when we were calling him Oziluz for his incredible vision and passing on the pitch. Now he is not much different from Joe Cole, and i fear this might be an insult to Joe.
No 6: Mueller - I really could have had the whole Germany XI and no one could have complained but a flop of his magnitude was momentous and needs to be acknowledged.
No 7 - Enzo Perez: I still have a hard time understanding what he is doing on the pitch, but truly an horrible world cup so far. good luck vs Kante.
No 8 - Kroos: He almost made the top 10 most valauble player in round 2 thanks to that fantastic goal. But then he assisted the goal that killed his country. I am surprise he is getting away with that so easily.
No 9: Pique - Still seems like Spain weakest link in this tourney
No 10 Messi: I thought about removing him from this list after the last game but it would have been too kind. He has horrendous in the first two game and given that we are talking about a potential goat, this level is not acceptable.
- ROUND 2:
- [ROUND 2]
BEST PLAYERS: Golden Ball
No 1: Cristiano - Until today, we was top scorer. but even after today, i still strongly feel like he has performed the best out of anyone so far this tourney.
No 2: Modric - The strength of his performance against Argentina puts him here, slight nudge over Harry. He is the best midfielder in the tourney, and capped his perf with a goal vs Argentina.
No 3: Prince Harry Kane: Top scorer of the world cup, 2 pks in the last game, but he is banging them as good as CR. Even if Panama are not good enough, can't deny the performance.
No 4 : Coutinho: Twice now he opened the score for Brazil to save Neymar. comfortably Brazil's best performer so far. Despite the pressure, he is doing good so far.
No 5: Lozano: Still having a very good world cup. runs everywhere, and had a key assist to put Mexico through
No 6: Lukaku: n2 in scorer so far in the world cup, 4 goals. easy games but he is doing his job and scoring.
No 7: Isco : Still the best performer for Spain in this world cup in my opinion.
No 8: Hazard: Lukaku made it here first round for his goals, but Hazard is for once leading and not hiding. despite their easy group, he deserves a spot here.
No. 9: Shaqqiri : Had a give him a spot here. we dont talk much about the swiss but they drew brazil and beat Serbia which looked impressive and opened the scorer against them.
No 10: Quintero : Quintero ahead of James for sure. Was excellent in both games for Colombia. Scored a cheeky free-kick goal in the opener although it should've been saved. I personally think he's been Colombia's best player this tournament thus far. He has revived himself again - Sugar
WORST: Plastic Ball
No 1: Caballero: good lord he is terrible, spends his season on the bench but here he is starting and stinking up the place.
No 2: Kawashima: it's amazing how bad some of the GKs are playing. mistakes on both games, Japan are lucky to have 4 points.
No 3 Messi: one of the most disappointing player this world cup. choked in both games;12 shots (most in WC) 0 goal. not acceptable.
No 4: Boateng - took over from Davinson Sanchez as worst Cb this tourney, he is doing, absolutely, and positively nothing. looks fat and out of shape
No 5 - Lewandowski: whelp, letting Yerri Mina snatch your lunchbox is just unacceptable. i am surprised he did not blamed the losses on his teammates.
No 6: Mueller - Looks rubbish nowodays. probably plays because he has naked pictures of Low
No 7 - Enzo Perez: we could put the whole argie Xi in this list, they have been mediocre. Enzo though Laughing typical Valencia player
No 8 - Khedira: So bad he was dropped in the second game
No 9: Pique - looks like Spain weakest link, getting carried by his team.
No 10: Piszczek - absolutely horrible in both losses, what a drop off from the player he used to be
- ROUND 1:
- [ROUND 1]
BEST PLAYERS: Golden Ball
No 1: Cristiano - Goat Hattrick vs Spain, clutch performance
No 2: Harry Kane: very strong game for England, capped with a clutch goal for the win
No 3 : Costa: Scored 2 in the best game so far, played a dominant game to help Spain earn a vital draw.
No 4: Lozano: Strong game vs Germany, and clinched the winner to score the biggest upset so far
No 5: Golovin: Even if it was vs Saudi Arabia, he scored his transfer o Juve with this game
No 6: Gimenez: Added him near because it's true he had a flawless game + late winner. most deserving than the guys below
N0 7: Isco : Eventhough he did not score, he was one of the best on the pitch imo.
No 8: Lukaku: n2 in scorer so far in the world cup, nothing to sneeze at
No 9: Modric: Ran the show for Croatia against a good Naija team
No 10: Halldorsson (Iceland's goalie): Good rec from TheOneWhoKnocks, he is right, he destroyed Messi in an heroic win. bumped him over the rest
WORST: Plastic Ball
1- Carlos Sanchez: brain dead
2- De Gea: cost his team a win with his butterfingers
3- Davinson Sanchez: worst defensive performance so far this world cup
4- Khedira: horrendous player, not sure how he starts for Germany
5- Umtiti: brain farted his way through the game
6- Bednarek: you can't forget a player on a defensive play like that, 0 awareness, cost his team a goal
7- Walker: another awful defensive showing
8- Messi: choked again in a clutch moment for his NT
9-Suarez: As my man Doc said, he was awful for uruguay. positively contributed to nothing
10: Cueva: terrible PK miss again, cant miss those in WC
ps: Saudi Arabia players clearly spend the year playing with tigers in the desert, they are not worth putting on the list

Re: WC best/worst player - power ranking
Didn't watch Germany, Brazil or Belgium games but my only question would be maybe Costa from Spain?
Thought he was really good personally, only really outshone by Ronaldo in that game. That game was so good i feel like two reps there is probably justified lol.

Isco?
He was incredible vs Portugal. I'd give it to him over Hazard

Re: WC best/worst player - power ranking
I'd put Gimenez of Uruguay among the best, got the winner and absolutely bossed the back line.
I much liked Lucas Hernandez for France, always involved.
Suarez among the worst, uffff did he ever suck
The rest seems good- I would maybe wait until after tomorrow's matches for this as there are four teams still to play and then do it like a matchday 1, matchday 2 type of thing

Re: WC best/worst player - power ranking
I assume you mean Costa, as in Diego Costa vs Portugal. If not, he should definitely be there. If that is what you meant, then that's a good spot for him.
Another plastic ball nominee should be Layun, was absolutely wasteful for Mexico. The number 10 for Tunisia, Khazri was the worst player I've seen so far so he can be there. Should Walker be there? Tunisia didn't offer anything besides the pk which he caused all on his own, feel he should. Pique? Nah, would be too harsh but I need the numbers.
So, to help with the Plastic ball nominess:
1- De Gea
2- Khedira
3- Umtiti
4- Messi
5: Cueva
6: Layun
7: Khazri
8: Walker
9: Pique?
10: ????

You could easily slip in Ozil for Pique if you find it to be too harsh. They both had a similar level of mediocrity to their game.

Re: WC best/worst player - power ranking
Iceland need at least 1 player in that top 10 imo. Anyone of Gunnarsson, Bjarnason or Halldorsson.
Wasn't impressed by Pogba. Looked disinterested and misplaced several passes before the goal. Don't think he did enough to get in either list.
Kolarov is worthy of at least honorable mention as well for that FK as well.
Thought Khazri was one of Tunisia's brighter players actually. Surprised to see him in the "worst" category.
Good lists overall though.

Re: WC best/worst player - power ranking
First post, long-time reader of the forum!
Great list, but I have slightly different opinions:
- Pogba: For me he was very poor besides the lucky goal (that has been taken away from him later)
- Cueva: Missed the PK, otherwise very active and the main creative force for Peru. Very Messi-esque performance, but relative to skill level/expectations I think it is too hard to put him on the list for one mistake. But I see why he is there. Without the PK miss he might be playing himself into a move to Europe...
BEST PLAYERS: Golden Ball
1. Cristiano (obvious)
2. Golovin
3. Costa
4. Modric
5. Kane
6. Isco
7. Kolarov
8. Halldorsson (Iceland's goalie)
9. Sakai
10. Lozano
HM: Elneny, Sainsbury, Granqvist, South-Koreas goalie (Cho?), Lukaku, Quintero (shame that he was subbed so early), Henderson
Plastic balls:
1. Suarez (worst player on the pitch by far)
2. Umtiti
3. Walker
4. De Gea
5. Khedira
6. Messi
7. Davinson Sanchez (awful, I like him but this was a shocker)
8. Boussoufa
9. Saudi-Arabia's CBs (you have to include them )
10. Hwang (really wasteful)
HM: Alderweireld (looks out of touch), Carlos Sanchez, Biglia, Son, Carrasco, Sterling

Re: WC best/worst player - power ranking
Can you say someone "gifts a penalty" when they concede the penalty preventing a certain goal?
It's not really the same as clumsily fouling someone on the edge of the box in no immediate danger
It's not a gift then, it's the price you have to pay
