While Russia is certainly a country with many sins, mostly against their own people, the Europe-enabled US foreign policy of the past 50 years have been far more responsible for deaths and destruction in the world.
A boycott of the Russian WC shouldn't happen without a concurrent boycott of the US and their armed thuggish allies.
Actually, Russa has been responsible for far more deaths and destruction than any Western based foreign policy. One can only look at Russia's involvement even in Afghanistan which cost more lives than any Western intervention. Same thing goes for states like Ethiopia with the Derg and Angola with the MPLA.
The US have created the monstrosity that is Radical Islamic terrorism , along with Saudi money and ideology. US coups in Iran, South America, and other countries have contributed to decades long civil wars. Not to mention their intervention wars in South East Asia and Korea.
Russia isn't clean, not by a long shot. However, only one country maintains military bases all over the world.

That's not the real story. And as far as military bases around the world, there are many within the US that want to see that drawn down. Many bases were in Europe and others have been in countries since the end of WWII. The US didn't create radical Islamic terrorism. And a lot of that terrorism was directed at old Soviet backed dictatorships in many of those countries. Yemen for example was a key one. The US hasn't done enough and hasn't made the right steps (under the present "adminstration") to migitate it and perhaps made it worse.
The US didn't directly or indirectly create it, but it hasn't helped stopped it and perhaps made it worse.
And guess who is back in town?
John F------King War Criminal Bolton.
There is nothing more than I hate from the Bush administration than that P.O.S.
Russia on the other hand is on a whole different level of criminality. The one American I would be willing to compare to Putin and his criminal gang is John Bolton. And people tend to forget Bush was very cozy with Putin.
Anyways, lets get back to football.

Can't blame them, Poverty can make you do anything which has a glimer of hope and most of India is backward and below poverty line outside the cities because of the wealth disparity.
Problem is not wealth disparity.
Problem is not enough wealth being generated because of government intervention of the socialist India which created market distortion in every field including education, agriculture, manufacturing.
The only sector which government couldn't interfere and is fairly new, which is service sector grew at a high level. It is no wonder our IT industry became a world wide hit... That is the industry with least government interference.
Government regulation is a good thing. It isn't bad, if done for the right reasons. A country with less government regulation is generally one with many more problems. Even US states with less regulation are a mess. Ohio and West Virginia are two US states where the state government is scaled back but the people are suffering from cancer and a whole lot of other ailments because of unregulated industry. Ohio is the state where a river caught fire afterall.
That is because first world problem is now environmental protection while India is still trying to increase GDP per capita.
Kuznets environmental curve applies.
India is still beginning on the curve while US is at the other end.

Coal power is not the only environmental degrading technology out there.
Every industry depletes the resources and hence environmental degradation occure. The developing nations however does not have the technology or capital to prevent such degradation since for them giving people job is the priority. Whether they live long is not a concern.
Developed countries however has different priorities. General well being and life expectancy gets a higher priority. They also have the capital and technology available to implement mechanisms to prevent environmental degradation.

BarrileteCosmico wrote:Considering how cheap solar power has become recently I'm not sure that chart still holds true
Solar power is cheap only in developed nations.. Which itself is a testament for Kuznets curve.
When the wealth increased developed nations found a way to reduce environment degradation through harvesting solar power.

Some updates on this:
- Boris Johnson turned out lying to German media and the world about getting assurances from the lab claim that they 100% told him the nerve agent could have only come from Russia as the lab denied it and said they couldn't provide a certain answer
- Both Skripals are recovering, but I thought this was the most hardcore deadly nerve agent?
- Skripal's cousin, Yulia, is denied visa to UK to visit her relatives. I wonder why? Does UK have something to hide?
- The only deceased people in this fiasco are Skripals' pets who were left caged and unattended by British authorities for weeks.
Maybe it's the BREXIT UK that should be boycotted instead ?

^ My dear friend, maybe it's why you should get your news from a wide variety of sources, as opposed to one or two, so you get exposure to everything.
I read Xinhua (Chinese state), BBC (UK State), RT (Russian State), Al-Jazeera (Qatari State), Noon In Korea, and of course American news broadcasters from Left to Right (MSNBC to Fox) and more. I see there are a lot of Indian posters here, I'd love to know which news sources they recommend to read what's happening in the world from the Indian eye. I have to be on top of what's happening in the geopolitical and economic world to make my money in the business, so I see it as part of my job.
That way, you get exposed to the news you otherwise would never get exposed to. You read everything that's out there, from different opposing perspectives, and as grown, adult men we can decide which news is more reliable and which news not and learn about the hidden agenda of all the sources I listed.
No doubt Skripal was attacked, but it remains a question who was the attacker at this point, especially with the latest revelations and developments. I hope the vicious attackers are brought to justice. I'm glad that he and his daughter are okay, and am looking forward to their first public interviews. Shame about the pets

Within India, Our media is a mess. I don't trust any of them. I read a couple of new breakways from these sources who strive to give unbiased views as much as they can. They are small sources but with big contacts.
I don't read anything out of China, I don't trust a word that comes from there. I follow Al Jazeera well but I take it with a pinch of salt because of their predominant affection for middle eastern policies.
I guess then its New York times, A bit of BBC and mostly Bloomberg and Financial times for the Business news.

Love it or hate it, the Chinese government knew Facebook is a thief of information and an arm of US intelligence and hence banned it immediately (and correctly in my opinion) in China.
Poor Americans citizens only found out 2 weeks ago, 10 years after China. Perhaps you should try reading some Chinese news for a while, it's a no-lose, if not political, at least about business, at least in my opinion.
However, if you have to recommend me one source to get news from India, what would you give? Many thanks, in advance.

Re: Rumors of WC boycott starting to pick up
I've not watched Indian media for about 2-3 years now so I can't name any channel that won't spice up news to cater to the uneducated majority.
Health issues and daily routines of Individual names with fame and power are more important than the country's problems for the Indian media.
I follow TheWire in India but maybe @S or @Adit can name better media channels that make an attempt at good journalism.

You should not watch the BBC at all. They produced, and aired, a tv show that included very offensive and hurtful material about Asian women, and in particular, Asian males.
The red guards posted a summary of it here:
I apologize for having to be the one to show that to you, but you must see what news you ingest. People willing to show your culture like that in 2017 should not be the one who gives you ANY news.
I know getting relevant news, in English, can be tough so I created a list.
Here are some Asian-themed networks you should follow:

Well Betty, Every Western TV is racist to Indians as well with the fake stereotypical accent on every character. We don't really mind but its when I hear "You speak really good English for an Indian" is when I lose my shit.
You sometimes just gotta let them live in 1950s.

I don't get you Betty.... Portraying certain groups of people in a certain way has always been present in film and everywhere else. Does this really offend you that much? You can't brush off stereotypes, every group, ethnicity and nation is subject to them

Indian Americans do mind. there was actually a documentary made where Indian Americans speak about their issues with media representation(and focuses heavily on Apu from the simpsons):
I am also impressed with media representation south Asians have been able to make for themselves recently with shows lik the Mindy project(problematic, but I feel her heart is in the right place), Master of none with Aziz Ansari, and the motion length film Jab Harry met Sejal. These are ways cultural battles can be won.
The issue arises when a STATE AGENCY, that people trust to give them news, pushes out propaganda like that. Remember when you(rightfully so I must add) gave me grief for ignorantly posting that Chinese State piece the 7 deadly sins of China? This is no different. Its very dangerous when sources we trust put harmful things into public discourse.
The BBC allowing a show to be a vehicle in which:
1)Asian women, a group with documented low self-esteem and self image problems in the west, are shown as sex objects for the majority.
2)Peddles stereotypes of desperate, oppressive, and small-penised Asian men.
3)Makes light of the fact of trying to create a divide in Asian couples(This is quite simply divide and conquer).
4)Creates a new term to classify men who, while living in an oppressive place most likely, simply seeks to befriend and unwind after a long hard day with people from their culture as losers.
Its propaganda that cannot be accepted in any level. The BBC stamp on it means you officially cant trust their reporting on anything to do with Asia. There is a disconnect there.

Its carefully scripted though. Its mind control.
Who told you that Asian men were unattractive? Who told you that they had small penises? These are thing we just accept as normal because they have been fed to us for decades by people making a conscious effort to shape the way we view the world. It should bother everybody that media forces, even some we were brought up to trust(The BBC), can be a vehicle in which harmful lies are peddled as truth. People are dying behind propaganda seen on shows like Chinese burn.
Hell, what do you think is going to happen to a kid who sees that and has to go out into the world the next day? A world where people have seen him shown in the worst light when he already has little media representation. A world that has taught his sister that shes ugly, and to revel in the fact that she can only become whole if she rejects him? A world where, arguably, the most famous Chinese philosophy towards a combat exercise is turned into a joke about a man's 1 inch penis?

Do you have a small dick? No, you probably have a big dick or perhaps at least a decently sized dick so why do you care if some Brits made an irrelevant shown generalizing and implying that in fact your wiener is small?
In Poland, the main notion Chinese people are associated with is that they're very intelligent. Everyone is subject to jokes, without exception, but believe me - you are pushing things out of proportion.

The gulag policy from 1934 to 1953 killed 12-15 million people in the USSR alone... let alone everything else.

The truth doesnt matter if EVERYBODY believes the lies though. Everybody is subject to jokes, but it isnt just jokes anymore. Its a systematic approach to dehumanize an entire group of people.
Its not an irrelevant show either because Asians are very much underrepresented in the uK, and shows like this are a vehicle to create and expose identity. What was shown is a desperate guy with a small penis. That is how the world views Asian men thanks to the media. If it isnt a big issue what do you think happens to young boys who grow up seeing that as representation of themselves. What also happens to their sisters?

Don't trust any TV news sources over anything political tbh. News is basically propaganda with bias as *bleep* spins either way depending on who runs the organisation.
Having said that, the only reason i'm looking forward to this World Cup is due to the political chaos surrounding it.
