rincon wrote:I don't know how many European actors can carry a film Japan. No idea. So I guess the producers are doing the sensible thing and playing it safe. Same exact thing as in the US.
I don't care either way, I've watched japanese movies with all japanese actors and I've enjoyed them. Same for Korean, German and French and I don't speak any of these languages or look like them. I almost always prefer that the people that are closer to the source material do the adaptions of the stories too.
In the end all sides do the same thing.
Also, when you say audiences don't differentiate between these different Asian nationalities. Its the exact same case for any country on earth. All of them. No chance that the Korean audience is telling apart the Guatemalan from the Honduran, or the Canadian from the American, etc.
I agree on the point of no difference being made, which is why I would be cool with a Chinese/korean/Thai/viet-american actress playing the role as Matoko Kusanagi. It gets weird when its always whitewashed though. They cant even give us that though. They make them just white, and then act like its normal.
I would be willing to bet most people don't care about the nationality of the stars in their films. GITS would have done the same, or maybe even better if Matoko actually looked like a Kusanagi.

It took me a second viewing to realise what a masterpiece The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is, and I'm not one who throws around the word 'masterpiece' for fun.

Watched Amy last night. Very good, and a haunting story of what fame can do to a person. You could tell even from the earliest days that this was a woman who just wanted to make her music and release it, and if she could avoid fame in any way she could.
It's absolutely disgusting the way these photographers and magazine, tabloid writers treat celebrities. While a lot of them can handle it, they're absolutely at least partially responsible for what happens to the likes of Amy Winehouse, who was already an incredibly vulnerable person. I know I'll never be famous and I'm glad for it, some of the scenes in that documentary were disgusting.
Imagine not being able to walk to your car without being hounded by press.
That's not to say that she wasn't responsible for her own downfall--she certainly was as well as her relationship with that scumbag Blake character--but I still find the press absolutely disgusting.
Anyway, great documentary and RIP to a talented musician lost far too young

Inb4 ES "is he playing the gay character?"
Crazy stupid love--hilarious. Don't know how it took me this long to see it. One of the better romantic comedies of the past few years.

Get Out was great. Best horror movie I watched in years. So clever, so well written, and not a wasted moment on the screen. Stuff you would think is filler you later realize was quite important. The last act will leave you at the edge of your seat and a lot of moments will really surprise you. Rollercoaster of an experience, recommended to everyone.

Anybody watch Affleck's Live By Night. Is it any good?
Has shitty ratings. I remember it had one of the best trailers I've ever seen. Pity, if it ended up being meh.

I don't have any interest in it tbh. The trailer was soooo good.
He was probably having a horrible time making it in his personal life on top of too many hats (writer, lead actor, director).

Why would you play a gay character if you are one IRL? Taking a page from Hollywood's book, you should be casted as a straight male

Re: The Movie House - Part 10
Watched The Fate Of The Furious midnight premiere two days ago. Its ridiculous, I really felt they jumped the shark with this film. It was still fun watching the film with friends and we scammed ourselves to D Box seats so that was fun. I didn't mind the ridiculous action set pieces, its the predictable plot points and cringe dialogue. Still the chemistry and charisma of the cast is as good as ever. Won't recommend it unless you are with a lot of friends and looking for mindless fun.

Also definitely missed Paul Walker. The Rock and Jason Statham were the highlights of the film. Rock actually cut one of his famous WWE promo word by word on Statham

Re: The Movie House - Part 10
Universal’s “The Fate of the Furious” is dazzling moviegoers worldwide with an estimated $534.2 million in box office in its launch weekend in 65 territories, Saturday estimates showed.
biggest worldwide opening weekend of all time apparently
can see lots of Chinese characters being added to franchises going forward, especially ones with ensemble casts, since the China market is insanely large now.
