Yes you are right, smart enough players, that run a lot and unselfish. Try finding that lot here in Madrid.
It's not the line up that is the problem, off form Ronaldo is the problem, cause if he is on form and scoring goals for fun, it doesn't matter if we play 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 it will work either way.
Again having said that playing two attacking-always wanting to score-wingers with two other wing-backs would leave other teams running riots in the middle.

The best way to hide CR as he's getting old would probably be to bench him

Yes we have that in madrid in both ronaldo and bale, their movements off the ball in attacking phases are great, specially Bale outside of the box now that he leverages his experience leading Wales and playing abit everywhere. CR movements are obviously to go inside, and Benzema when on form has movements as good any CF out there.
And even when Ronaldo is scoring, formation and how we line up matters. i think we went through enough coaches to experience that.
To your last point, well, we already have 2 always wanting to score wingers with too attacking fullback lol.

I am saying that when Ronny is on fire no matter what formation you play you will always have an extra hand and it is like playing with 12 players. But as of this season, all he does is mess up like 85% of the attacks, jumps like a child when someone doesn't pass him the ball, shooting sky-high.
But even if he finds his form, that formation would not work. Facing teams above the top10, they know how to hold the ball, and it is not a good idea for attackers to help out the midfield leaving the final third empty.
In fact that is whats the problem with the current tactics, we play to far from the goal, we need to go closer to the goal, push higher. Its like only on corner kicks and free kicks that we get men inside the opposition penalty area. We need to overcrowd their penalty area, it is easy defending against one or two attackers while others sit back in around 25-30m from the goal. At times you have only Benzema on the 16m line.
