I just turn up here to disagree with those calling him a 'terrible defender' because of this, which is about as clueless as it gets.
Mole in particular Smile

He's overrated and you have to deal with it.

well, whether he's great, good, terrible, or ok, one thing is sure - he isn't 'overrated', since noone here rates him Laughing

Boateng is not terrible, he is a really good defender and sometimes does some great things. He played a 70m long pass with his left foot which landed perfectly where Muller was standing. I was in awe of that pass.

I don't think he's terrible Laughing

I just find him to be overrated due to the fact he's out of position a lot. You have to understand though I hate aggressive defenders in general because more often than not they leave space behind them which leads to goals.

I thought the 2010 WC overrated his entire career if that's what you mean hmm

Nesta was always far better in my eyes.

This is 19 year old Messi against Cannavaro few months after that, few days before he received his Ballon d'Or. Don't know if it helps.  Very Happy

Have people forgotten that this same player came up with man of the match performances in both the UCL 2012-13 and WC 2014 finals?

I think it's also something to do with who is your coach, how much he trusts you, how well you fit into his style and what he can bring out of you.

Cannavaro was great also in his first WC,  France 98 ,we knocked out against that great France just after penalty kicks ( it was the first time I cried because of football Laughing )  because he was unreal , him and Bergomi the best in pitch that day .. Cannavaro was indeed the MOTM , a match concluded as a real warrior after that elbow given him by Newcastle legend Guivar'ch.

Otherwise France trashed us  easily , we had a fantastic team but a manager really scrub ( Cesare Maldini ) incapable to give game to that NT .. great regret

Basically Cannavaro was always GOAT with  National team , better than Nesta because the 2nd was basically unlucky with it , got injured in France 98 against Austria and 2006 against Czech Republic ( anyway considering Materazzi's WC it was a luck lol )

But for the rest if we omitte the career in NT ( and I think the players must be rated expecially for clubs . I don't get the Messi haters for what he does with Argentina when he makes unreal things every season ffs Laughing ) , well  , Mole is ABSOLUTELY right.

Nesta >>>> Cannavaro .
In 2002 we were going to sign Nesta from Lazio ( Lazio obliged to sell his stars because of bankrupt, it began Serie A decline with Lazio , Parma,Fiorentina,Roma to die for financial problems) but we didn't want to give Cristiano Zanetti and so we signed Cannavaro from Parma ... It was a sliding door tbh.

Cannavaro is one of the biggest myths in football. The guy was no better than Ramos. Defended using guesswork and when he went to La Liga he embarrassed himself. Benefited from playing alongside Thuram who covered his tiny ass. That's why people shouldn't take the Ballon D'Farce seriously. The guy cannot hold a candle to Baresi, Nesta or even Costacurta. Hell Ciro fer. was a mich better cb.
