and the same goes for success, i remember when we were winning at the start of the season and everyone and their dog said this was the best madrid side since di stefano.....really? we can't be the best based on "titles" like super cups or intercontinental cups...trophies and legacies are cemented in june, not december (another reason why handing out balon d'ors in january doesn't make sense to me, but that's another debate/ can of worms on its own)

benzema's playing well, a meaningless friendly for france should have no impact on  what he does at madrid, and if this is a way of advocating for giroud, stop it, even arsenal fans know giroud can't lace his boots. i'll have to agree with the benzema 'fanboys/fangirls' on this one, any anti-benzema agenda based on this game is ridiculous

I don't think Benzema deserves any criticism based on his performances in recent time, and especially not based on his overall contributions for Real Madrid over the past year - he's easily been one of our most consistent performers, and his game has developed so much since his joined the club over half a decade ago.

With that being said, I still stand by my opinion that the club has been extremely patient with him, and I know some people will disagree with me on this, but there used to be a time when he was consistently playing on a level similar to what Bale has been displaying this season. There was a time when the Real Madrid board had to decide between selling either Híguain or Benzema, and a lot of people were disappointed when the former was shown the door.

I had a soft spot for Benzema. Having watched him perform for Lyon, not only on TV, but also from the stands of Stade de Gerland; I had a significant bias towards him, and I was ecstatic when he signed for Real Madrid. During his first two years at the club, I was one of those people who kept clinging to the self-deception of his talent eventually coming to fruition, as long as the club had faith and patience in him.

One can only speculate on the reasoning behind the decision of keeping the player who, in the eyes of the majority of speculators, perhaps had more talent, but was the worse performer out of two players who were both performing below par - but time has shown that they definitely made the right choice, and the Benzema of today is a player that I have no doubt would be a significant contributor and asset to any top team.

However, I think people are quick to forget that Real Madrid have been extraordinarily patient with Benzema. Especially, considering how little patience they have with their players, in general. After two years of defending and justifying Benzema's poor performances, occasional clumsiness, lack of clinicality and tendency to lose possession of the ball for no other reason than incompetence - I was fed up, I'd lost hope and I opened my eyes to the possiblity that he could end up in another club like Híguain, or even worse, turn out to be another player that pundits and casual supporters would refer to as "another player ruined by Real Madrid".

But everything turned out well. I certainly don't miss Híguain. I held him in high regard for his passion and personality, but I know for damn sure that Benzema is a better fit for this team than El Pipita would be, and I have no doubt about who's more talented. I don't really see any logic in people claiming that he's either a scapegoat or immune to criticism, though. The way I see it, a lot of people have conveniently forgotten about his forgettable past - some even claim it never happened - and others are quick to give him all credit when he's been one out of several cogs in a winning machine. I may be wrong, but this up and down treatment by fans is generally not exclusive to Benzema. The difference is that he has a few hardcore fans on here that will blow it out of proportion when he does get criticized, which in turn leads to more criticism and focus on his performances.
