Mr Nick09 wrote:@El Cujo, can i ask? what's the best game that Suarez played in the best season in history of his?
I feel like this is a loaded question. You're expecting me to say Norwich right? Yes, that performance was absolutely spectacular, but the best players in the world will always look even better again inferior competition. It's not like guys like Henry, Ronaldo and even Messi didn't put in incredible games against weaker competition that people were drooling over. He was still immense in games against Arsenal, Spurs, United and City, and even against Chelsea he was not bad just not up to the level people were expecting of him.

Re: DMzema Returned
If you look at only the PL performance Henry in 03/04 had 30 goals and 2 assists (scored 7 penalties) in 3,330 minutes played. Ronaldo had 31 goals and 7 assists (also 1 penalty won, 4 penalties scored) in 2,746 minutes played. Luis Suarez had 31 goals and 12 assists (also 9 penalties won, 0 penalties taken) in 2,962 minutes played.
From a purely statistical standpoint Suarez created the most goals per minute/game and also won an additional 9 penalties on top of that that he didn't even get to take (should really add that to his assist total). That's on top of everything else he did to cause trouble for the other team with his antics, work rate and build-up as well as defensive pressure.
It's splitting hairs sometimes with the amazing seasons some players have had, but when you look at it from an objective point of view it's hard to argue against how dominant his season was.

Re: DMzema Returned
@cujo Suarez might have been impressive against spurs, city, and chelsea but those weren't enough to call truly memorable performances for the ages. Yes, those other afformentioned players were incredible against scrubs but they also had truly memorable performances against the very best teams, by or by not scoring goals. I mean truly epic games by those players REPEATEDLY (henry, cr7, messi, or r9, zidane etc) u name them.
But suarez only had such performance last season against norwich and nothing else was close. Not trying to diss your logic, but just trying to say that i understand where nick is coming from.
So in reality, norwich was his best game.

Just to get back to the current comparison... Benz has his best games against Barca. It took him a couple of years, but he figured their system out. Now, he is the most lethal weapon Madrid has against them.
Ask Bankz or any other Barca fan... he is the best attacking Madrid player against Barca.

Re: DMzema Returned
In those 'best ever seasons' Henry's best game was against Leeds and Ronaldo's best game was against Newcastle...or maybe Aston Villa.
Either way they didn't have career defining performances against the big teams in those seasons. You have to look at the whole, not just individual games especially in a title challenging season or top 4 challenging season where every single game is important. Just look at the recent set of FA Cup fixtures to see how easy it is to slip against lesser teams (where the title is really won, since it's more about consistency than it is about big games in a 38 game schedule, though obviously the big games are important).
Suarez having his best game against Norwich doesn't change that he was by far the best player in the PL consistently, and likely had the best single season in the PL.

@cujo true. But i wasn't just talking bout last season but i was talking in general in terms of consistent performances. But like u said, even the small games can be the most important sometimes.
@sportz. Thats not even up for debate. He has always been a big game player right from his lyon days and barca has become his favourite eatery.

Re: DMzema Returned
big games separate the men from the boys however... the results of those have 2x effect on points if you're in league and they are your direct competitors. Little teams are nice and need to be dealt with... but they don't have anywhere the direct impact on the final standings. You're also much more likely to deal with lesser opponents even if you're not at top form while you will get eaten of you're not at your best against your direct competitors.
Madrid, Barca, Chelsea, Bayern etc. don't buy all these top players to deal with the league fodders... they want them against the top teams and when there are trophies on the line.

Re: DMzema Returned
...and yet often enough, at the end of the day, how often do teams end up looking at missed spots or titles because they stumbled against a 'minnow'? Would Barcelona not have won the league last season if they had beaten or drawn against Sociedad, Valencia, Granda or Bilbao? Because they didn't lose any matches against Madrid or Atletico in league play.
Every game is important. Big games are tougher to win which makes the other games even more important, no? In a perfect world where you win every game you're supposed to yes the big games are even more important, but in reality if you win every single game that you're supposed to you will probably win the league (as a big team).
Look at a team like Chelsea and their record against the top 4 in the EPL last season (they won every single game except a draw away to Arsenal). Why didn't they win the title?

Re: DMzema Returned
striking out in the big games = no chance for trophies. Lesser games are important. But that's not the stage where the top players get rated. You're not facing top competition individually or in terms of a team so you're not proving anything by beating up on them... Top players are there to make the difference against the direct competitors and in CL.... that's how you get rated.
The key is to do well against the lesser opponents so your club wins those... but raise your level even higher against the top opponents so that you show your quality against your true peers.
To be clear... we're talking about what separates good players from the great ones. The great ones are on full diplay in the biggest stages.
And btw, my criticism in not just for Suarez here. I was all over CR7 until just about 24 months back. I thought he was a fake superstar because he sucked when it counted the most. He changed that (although he's still not consistent in these games; he has his moments now though as opposed to nothing before).

Re: DMzema Returned
big games meh and fodder smashing stuff of legends
gotta love hype logic
i have been saying for a while that suarez isn't better than benzema, and that he would struggle not being focal point, just how shit works outside of fifa
also benzema always maintains longs stretches of form, he hasn't been scoring at the same rate for obvious reasons (bale ), but his level of play as been consistent, just like last season cause he plays with the most sense

Re: DMzema Returned
can we really compare benzema and suarez last year? they had different roles on their respective teams, so a head to head comparison based on goals scored, assists, efficiency and all that can hardly be made. suarez' rivals would be cristiano, ibra, messi, aguero etc simply because they were the talisman on their teams , would see the ball more, get double or sometimes triple teamed, and the main focus of opposition defenders would be on them.
Now however, you can compare both players, as they are playing (at least on paper) similar roles. At madrid cristiano is considered first choice with respect to scoring and who the players look for, bale may be considered second choice, and benzema is tasked with scoring as well as providing the one-touch pass in and around the area to keep play going. messi and neymar are first and second choice respectively, and suarez third.
in that respect, benzema has obviously had a much better season and impact than suarez, its not even close. But, to be fair, this is only suarez' first season (and he's had the suspension), there will be more cases to compare as years move along. But right now, it isn't even debatable benzema has been far ahead of him so far. you guys will be able to make a good assessment of both of em in coming seasons
