Just really having a hard time convincing myself that Debuchy is that TOP TOP TOP talent we always her Arsene talking about. He really just seems more like another mid table talent. Not a championship talent that is going to help us take over Europe.

What rightback will improve you so vastly that you'll "take over Europe" after signing him?

The only undeniably world class one out there is Philipp Lahm and there's no way anyone is prying him away Bayern Munich.

Interesting that he didn't mention a striker. Maybe that suggests that priorities have changed now that Sanchez has become available, or that we see him as a central player.

Hopefully we can get Debuchy completed soon, and if we can add Sanchez on top of that in the next couple of weeks that'd be brilliant.

Chile forward is nearing a move from Barcelona to London with the £10 million deal for Newcastle defender Mathieu debuchy all but sealed

Mathieu Debuchy’s proposed £10 million transfer to Arsenal is moving close to completion, with the FA Cup winners also now confident of a deal for Alexis Sanchez.

Arsenal are deep in negotiations with Barcelona over Sanchez, while Newcastle are also understood to be ready to sell Debuchy although they are still hoping for a fee closer to £12 million.

Representatives of Sanchez also held talks last week with Liverpool but it is understood that Arsenal have already agreed a deal in principle with the Chile forward. Arsenal have made one bid to Barcelona of around £22 million but are ready to push their offer beyond £25 million for a striker who was one of the early stars of the World Cup.

Debuchy kept Arsenal’s former right-back, Bacary Sagna, out of the France team in Brazil and wants to leave Newcastle United following the sale of Yohan Cabaye to Paris St Germain in January.

The choice of Debuchy signifies a subtle change of strategy by Arsenal. At 28, he is older than Wenger’s usual profile of signing and suggests that he is now very much trying to buy for the here and now.


At 25, Sanchez is also in the peak years of his career. The club have moved into a new phase of financial strength this summer amid a series of new commercial deals and Wenger has a transfer budget of around £100 million.

As well as right-back, his other transfer priorities are central midfield and further cover in the goalkeeper and centre-back positions. Wenger also intends to give Joel Campbell, the Costa Rica striker, his chance during pre-season although he could yet spend another season on loan, especially if Sanchez arrives.
