Re: The Movie House - Part 4
I like things being open ended. If I see the director's cut and hear that this was meant to be just his hallucination and he actually died right at the spot and all of the later events didn't really happen. Then that won't go down well with me personally.

Come to think of it, I think I watched the director's cut first time out.

For some reason unknown to me I watched Divergent...And I liked it...And I hate myself for it...But I like it
It's usually the sh*t I despise. But the story and concept were very good and tricked my brain.

Can't bring myself to watch it, although seeing posts like this might tempt me one night.
May feel dirty and ashamed afterwards.

Re: The Movie House - Part 4
It's filled with stereotypes that hook the general audience similar to those Spanish (Armando...Yo soy tu madre) soap operas,American filmography style.
But has other qualities.

Watched it with my gf (against my will) and kinda felt the same. Similar to the giver, it knew its target audience and certainly appealed to the teen (specifically girls) group, it was cheesy as hell sometimes, fairly predictable etc.
Still, I found myself not hating it. As you said, story and concept were not bad at all, which saved the movie for me. I wouldn't say I liked it, but it wasn't a bad movie.

What's so wrong about Divergent?

Re: The Movie House - Part 4
Divergent wasn't that bad, but it didn't have the substance of the Hunger Games, which drove a much deeper narrative and (for me, at least) provoked a lot more thinking.
Divergent's your typical Dystopian YA story. A strength and a weakness in equal measure.

Re: The Movie House - Part 4
going to two movies at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) on friday.
first: "Escobar: Paradise Lost" to watch the legend
then Pawn Sacrifice...with main man, Sepi lookalike Tobey Maguire playing the role of legendary Bobby Fischer.
can't wait to compare the crowds at those movies, because they are soooo different

Re: The Movie House - Part 4
Shutter Island
8/10
- Spoiler:
- Was a very good film. Speculated at the start that he was a patient himself and was hallucinating all of this. However I was only half right. The role play thing was a good twist. Even then I thought there might be a double bluff and he actually was sane. But he wasn't in the end lol.
The ending was not as debatable as I've heard. He clearly realised he was insane but pretended to be still insane so he can get lobotomised because the guilt was too much for him to handle.

Re: The Movie House - Part 4
Some friends I hangout with from work will likely do this when Battle of the 5 Armies is available to torrent.
We've already done a Star Wars Marathon, A Marvel Movie marathon and are in the middle of a Harry Potter marathon as well with Star Trek up next.
Only a matter of time before we do one for LOTR/Hobbit

Re: The Movie House - Part 4
Went to 2 movies at TIFF, and here are my reviews and things.
1- Escobar: Paradise Lost
We all know Pablo Escobar, but despite the title, this movie is not some sort of a life documentary of the legendary drug lord. It creates a fictional character, Nico, who meets and marries Escobar's niece, Maria, in Medellin Colombia and gets to know Pablo Escobar that way. It shows Escobar's relationship with his family, countrymen, and also his other calm, yet brutal side. The story has a nice flow to it, until it climaxes in the last half hour with unexpected turn of events. The ending was good, and I loved Benicio Del Toro's performance. Josh Hutcherson was meh, I think he could have done a bit better. Overall, 7/10
2- Pawn Sacrifice
It's the tail of Bobby Fischer. It's not a documentary sort of thing like "Bobby Fischer Against The World", but it focuses on the cold war and the importance of Fischer-Spassky (USSR and world champion) game in 1972 in Iceland. Tobey Maguire was BRILLIANT at role of Bobby I felt. The film is not about chess, but rather a unique, yet paranoid character in Bobby Fischer who is among the very first celebrities of the pop culture, yet he hates Russians and Jews. It shows the good and the disturbed, and the tail of the world championship and what led to it. Liev Schreiber was great as well, and the film had some unexpectedly humorous moments too (Loved the scene when Bobby is losing his virginity, and then stops thinking of a chess variation ) . However, as a person who knows about Fischer greatly, I think the movie could have included/added some interesting parts, but perhaps time was a limiting issue. All in all, absolutely fascinating watch and time flies by. 8/10

The Cider House Rules:
8/10
Micheal Caine is a beast.....Charlize Theron I think was very good (what a name Candy Kendall) and Tobey carried it off well, but he was very expressionless, but that's his style. A very nice, touching, movie.
