Re: Barclay's Premier League discussion '13-'14 V9
Under-fire referee Andre Marriner will officiate Saturday's Premier League game between Southampton and Newcastle at St Mary's.
Marriner has been under intense scrutiny since he sent off the wrong player in Chelsea's 6-0 thrashing over Arsenal at the weekend and there had been calls for the 43-year-old to be stood down.
But the experienced official was included as the Premier League handed out games for the upcoming weekend to officials on Monday afternoon.
Marriner came under fire after he dismissed Kieran Gibbs instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the first half of the Gunners' dismal defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Oxlade-Chamberlain appeared to handle the ball on the goal-line with Chelsea already 2-0 up, which Marriner saw, but he sent off Gibbs instead in a case of mistaken identity.
Marriner was thought to be deeply affected by the incident and devastated at his high-profile mistake.
After the match, the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, the referees' body, issued a statement saying: "Andre is an experienced referee and is obviously disappointed that an error of mistaken identity was made.
"Incidents of mistaken identity are very rare and are often the result of a number of different technical factors."

Re: Barclay's Premier League discussion '13-'14 V9
While Marriner's mistake was a terrible one, the decision to retain him was the right one, imo. We all make mistakes (and he got the call itself right anyway, calling it handball).
So, we are treated to some mid-week PL footy, actually three important games tomorrow:
Arsenal v Swansea
Goes without saying it'll be a mini-crisis at Arsenal if they fail to win, but they're the clear favourites here.
Newcastle v Everton
If Everton wish to keep any sort of pressure on the top-4, they must win this one.
Manchester United v Manchester City
Liverpool fans, how do we feel about this one?
Or United fans, for that matter?
Theoretically speaking, whom would you prefer to win the title, City or us?

Re: Barclay's Premier League discussion '13-'14 V9
If Manchester United beat Manchester City, then Liverpool's title hopes are in their own hands. While I still think it's quite unlikely that we manage it, if City lose to United and Liverpool win all 8 remaining matches LFC would win the title by a point (assuming Chelsea and City drop no points outside of their matches at Anfield).
Hypothetically, Moyes's United could by the ones who ultimately provides Liverpool the chance to win the title.
That entire scenario relies on a number of unlikely circumstances, though.

We should be running away with the League with our record against the Top 10 this season. Shocking that the lack of a flat track bully in our squad might end up costing us the League.
Hopefully, Spurs, United and Arsenal do us favours.

That's what some Arsenal fans said as well. It's been an odd, odd season and making any declarative, hardline statements has proven to be a fool's errand so far.Blue Barrett wrote:We aren't losing at Anfield, that's certain.

Agreed. Chelsea's side is much more balanced and better than Liverpool's. But Liverpool still may win the league over Chelsea interestingly enough

If it's in a winner take all situation in that game at Anfield, I am certain we will in. The atmosphere will be 2005-esque and hopefully we'll win by a ghost controversial goal, hopefully. So Mourinho will keep moaning about it for another decade

Re: Barclay's Premier League discussion '13-'14 V9
If any club in the PL currently has the momentum and options in attack to break down a Mourinho special, it's Liverpool.
I'm honestly more concerned that he'll come to Anfield looking to go blow-for-blow with us, as I think Chelsea are one of the few sides that could properly press and strangle our midfield and beat us at our own game on their day.
