It is going to be 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, which is what i was expecting.

We better start 4-3-3, i can't see where Sturridge would fit in a 4-2-3-1. He won't work as a midfielder.

Where did the 4-2-3-1 come from blue? We didn't play that lineup and AVB used a 4-3-3 last season.

I think we did play a type of 4-2-3-1 for the first half and thus he might be considering that for next season. Anyways those two formations are the only ones that will effectively work.

formation first half

--------------------------------------Mikel-------------------------------------
-----Kaby( :?: )---------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------Benayoun-------------------------
----Kakuta-------------------------------------------------Malouda---------
----------------------------Drogba--------------------------------------------
second half
B. Clifford (Mellis 65), McEachran, Zhirkov, Kalou; Anelka, Torres.
----------------------------------------defense--------------------------------
------------------------Billy------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------McE---------------------------------
----Kalou-------------------------------------------------Zhirkov---------
-------------------Anelka--------------------------------------------------
----------------------------Torres--------------------------------------------
formations were slightly different, first half was 4-5-1, second was 4-3-3FIRST HALF
defense
mikel
kakuta--kabby--yossi--malouda
drogba
this is pretty much the same formation eh? Kakuta and Malouda are wing forwards so they will play much more ahead of those players, kabbi and yossi. Yossi most certainly played a close to the forwards role because thats his natural position. They can say all they want about a 5 man midfield but Kakuta and Malouda will play a wing forward role. Its pretty obvious.Second half
defense
clifford--josh--zhirkov
kalou--anelka--torres
This ofcoz is something i didn't think of, and if AVB used Torres as a wide striker i dont understand his intentions.
source:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2014098/Fernando-Torres-hits-target-flash-new-Chelsea-boss-Villas-Boas.html#ixzz1RwkQJ9Em
Villas-Boas varied his formations, starting with Didier Drogba up front alone and John Mikel Obi anchoring a five-man midfield, then playing a familiar 4-3-3 system in the second half with Torres, Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou in attack.

Maybe he just wanted to test him there. Or maybe he just wanted him to run to gain fitness.

LOL I really dont think that Torres would have played a wide role.. Anelka is better suited for that role.
Re: Chelsea Pre Season Fixtures 11/12
Guys Di Matteo gave a good interview about how well pre season is going and why they chose the youngsters:
Roberto Di Matteo believes there is plenty of evidence from Tuesday's friendly victory over Wycombe at Cobham to suggest it will be a successful pre-season campaign.
Our first summer friendly saw us defeat our League One visitors 3-0 at the training ground, with goals from Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres and Serbian defender Slobodan Rajkovic, and but for the woodwork and some profligate finishing the gap would have been greater.
The view from the dugout is that things are moving in the right direction after a week back in training.
'It was a good exercise for the players,' assistant first team coach Di Matteo said. 'We were looking to put into practice the work from some of what we have done in the first six days of training and we have seen some positive work, good attitude from the players and generally we were pretty pleased with the outcome.
'Despite the fact we only scored three times, we created a lot of chances, hit the post twice and missed a number of chances, but that's a healthy sign for any team when you create chances.
'There was some good possession during the game and the transition was good, in that when we lost the ball we quite quickly won it back again, so there are positive signs.'
Manager Andre Villas-Boas chose a mixture of youth and experience, with youngsters Tomas Kalas, Kaby, Billy Clifford and Jacob Mellis all involved in either half alongside the more established first-team figures.
Di Matteo explained the manager's thinking, before looking ahead to the weekend's away game at Portsmouth and trip to Asia that follows.
'The manager wants to have a look at the young players in the club. We have had a number of them training with us from day one and some of them have impressed as well,' said the Italian. 'We are pretty pleased and will continue to monitor them and give them a chance to show their value. Some of them will travel with us to Asia too.
'On Saturday at Portsmouth we are probably looking at giving the players a similar number of minutes again, in a similar format.
'It will obviously be a bit more competitive because they are a Championship side and it will be a tough test.
'Then we fly to Asia and be travelling around a little bit with four games. It is a busy schedule and we will try to get the best out of the players in pre-season to be ready for when the season starts.'

Nice to hear the players play the type of football Villas-Boas wants and be in a good shape!!
Great! So Villas-Boas has been impressed by the youngsters and they are going to take some to Asia! Hopefully he gives them and the ones if our first team a proper chance and not just talk like Carlo.

Sturridge and Bertrand have finally joined up with the rest of the squad.
Chalobah will be going with the squad to Asia.

Yes, That would be amazing And of course another goal for Torres as well, I don't care if it's a tap in or offside or anything, He needs goals.

Re: Chelsea Pre Season Fixtures 11/12
Personally hope McEachran plays a blinder and forces his way into the starting XI like Wilshere did a year ago.
Oh and Billy Clifford finally received a call up to an England side at any level (he was called up for the U-20 WC) but he turned it down as he wants to impress AVB in pre-season.
I really rate the lad highly. Great technique, pacey, good passer of the ball and very athletic. He's one of those players that doesn't really have a fixed position yet though (Joe Cole still doesn't have one and he's 30!!! )

watching the game right now, we really suck at winning the ball in any decent high-up-the-pitch situation.
